Join us for a book talk with Prof. ๐—ฌ๐—ฎ๐˜€๐—ฒ๐—บ๐—ถ๐—ป ๐—œ๐—ฝ๐—ฒ๐—ธ! She will present a story of Lebanon through the lens of activist lifeworlds, showing how, amid crisis, both political structures and everyday life become terrains of generative possibility. Through an ethnographic investigation into the relationship between crisis and political imagination, Yasemin examines activism as an open-ended process, looking at the diversity of experiences that leads to political engagements. As she follows a range of self-identified activists, she demonstrates how class-based and other inequalities at local and global scales shape their lived realities and political imaginations. ๐—ฌ๐—ฎ๐˜€๐—ฒ๐—บ๐—ถ๐—ป ๐—œ๐—ฝ๐—ฒ๐—ธ is an Assistant Professor in the Global Affairs Program at George Mason University. #AbbasiProgram #StanfordIslamicStudies #Activism #Lebanon #CrisisWork

๐Ÿ‘‰ Event sponsors: Abbasi Program in Islamic Studies, History Department, @mideaststanford, Program in History and Philosophy of Science and Technology Join us for another event from our Islam and Science series! Often dismissed as a time of radical "decline" and marked by derivative commentaries and little original work, the period after the "Golden Age of Islam" has nonetheless been reclaimed by recent scholarship as intellectually dynamic, with coherent but different epistemic priorities. Examining mathematical manuscripts on geometry, Tomasson argues that these were not "mere commentaries" nor simply Greek mathematics in Arabic, but reflect a shift away from Greek epistemologies to new Islamic discursive traditions. ๐—๐˜‚๐—น๐—ถ๐—ฎ ๐—ง๐—ผ๐—บ๐—ฎ๐˜€๐˜€๐—ผ๐—ป is an Assistant Professor of Premodern Science and Technology at Rice University. #AbbasiProgram #StanfordIslamicStudies #StanfordIslamAndHistorySeries #ArabicGeometry #Polyphony

Muna Guvenc elucidates how urban and architectural forms are not merely the backdrop of the cityscape where political struggles unfold; they constitute the very essence of these conflicts. Guvenc posits that urban spaces offer "wiggle room", turning oppression into chances for dissent and resilience. In this talk, Guvenc takes readers from municipal halls to the streets and illustrates how, in the early 2000s, pro-Kurdish parties harnessed urban planning to resist coercion and foster Kurdish mobilization in Turkey. ๐— ๐˜‚๐—ป๐—ฎ ๐—š๐˜‚๐˜ƒ๐—ฒ๐—ป๐—ฐ is an Assistant Professor of architectural history in the Department of Fine Arts at Brandeis University. #Turkey #Kurds #PoliticalMobilization #Nationhood #AbbasiProgram #StanfordIslamicStudies

Black and Muslim people from the US, S. Asia, and the Caribbean collided in the interwar era of the 20th century across an expansive diasporic geography, what Morgan calls the Atlantic Crescent, reigniting Islam among people of African descent. As their dreams met the realities of colonialism and race, Islam offered new strategies for combating oppression. Envisioning this encounter, Morgan shows how they imagined and acted on their religious and racial identities in pursuit of liberation. ๐—”๐—น๐—ฎ๐—ถ๐—ป๐—ฎ ๐— . ๐— ๐—ผ๐—ฟ๐—ด๐—ฎ๐—ป is an Assistant Professor in the Department of History at USC. #BlackDiaspora #BlackMuslims #Colonialism #Identity #StanfordIslamicStudies #StanfordAbbasiProgram
