Want to do a video or blog about my career as a SWE so far. From the moment I made the decision to finally become a programmer (after dabbling around it for many years) and now that I have finally secured a job. All without college or any bs bootcamp. Not sure which one tho.

@avi_codes Yes I can see how tbh but I think there is nothing you can do other than maybe ignoring it ? Or just responding with something like โ€œI donโ€™t really like when people ask me thatโ€๐Ÿซ

@avi_codes I used to care a bit because Iโ€™m Mexican and have an accent but I donโ€™t care no more. I donโ€™t mind having my accent or getting asked if Iโ€™m Mexican since I learned English when I was 18 lol so itโ€™s nothing to be ashamed of.

@avi_codes Depends who is asking and their tone. Or if they ask what nationality I am but they meant ethnicity. ๐Ÿ™„

@avi_codes Does the offer come close to what you feel is your worth? At least get minimum wage, and if you have some experience (even limited), request a little more.

Need advice! Does it make sense to negotiate an offer as someone who has limited industry experience? I was told my technical interview presentation was one of the best, and received a verbal offer with an hour of my final interview. Unsure of whether to use that as reasoning ๐Ÿ™

@avi_codes I feel you. Was in the same situation a while ago, struggling with myself if I should ask or not bc it would be my ticket into tech. Not even I got the salary I wanted but a big raise on top of that. You should try, wish you best luck! ๐Ÿ€

@Elixir_Js I have everything written in third person, past tense. Ensure to be consistent with your writing in your bio, experience descriptions, etc. Link projects. Also, if youโ€™re searching for work, customize your profile pic so it has the โ€œOpen to Workโ€ badge ๐Ÿ‘Œ๐Ÿผ

@Elixir_Js Ask people youโ€™ve worked with if they are willing to write you thorough recommendations that highlight your top skills! Ask them to highlight specific stories to make it personal. I have some of these on my profile and they help show that I actually am competent in my skills.

Recruiters will often give an offer *expecting* that youโ€™ll negotiate. As a hiring manager, I once wanted to give a top-of-band offer but the recruiter insisted on slightly less, expecting them to negotiate. I agreed- but the candidate accepted the offer without negotiating! ๐Ÿคฆ๐Ÿฝโ€โ™‚๏ธ

@ShawnAxsom @TiffTiffAnny Agreed. If you've decided to hire me, you clearly see the value in my skills and what I bring to the table, and we've already spoken about them at length.

Here's a general framework I use for negotiating - Thank them - Prep the convo - List the skills you'd be contributing to the team - Align yourself to the team's mission / interests - CTA - Thank them & offer to hop on a call to chat or answer any additional questions

@almeezyuh True, I need to keep in mind that the worst they can do is say no! Someone recommended Glassdoor and I saw the base pay range. My offer amount was the lowest value in the range ๐Ÿคฃ so now I understand why you say they leave room to negotiate!
