@bayesianboy

I’m not like the other Bayesians. I’m different. Thinks about philosophy of science, AI ethics, machine learning, models, & metascience. postdoc @ Princeton.

My article on AI for science, in which I characterize a deviant notion of scientific objectivity rooted in the impossible ideal of theory-free inference, is available now open-access in Erkenntnis link.springer.com/article/10.100…

AI for peer review! Injecting cyanide into a dead horse.
Ilias Alami@IliasAlami

@YaGotBlieve2022 Academic peer review is broken and has been for while. Being against AI slop in academic production does not mean I want to protect or defend such system. It is however undeniable that AI slop is making it even worse by the day.

@IliasAlami What nobody talks about is the feedback loop. Every hallucinated citation that makes it into a published paper becomes training data for future models. We're building a self-reinforcing ecosystem of academic fiction.

Who needs wikipedia when you have grokipedia? “He completed a PhD in Philosophy from the University of Cincinnati in 2025...In her late teens, Mel Andrews balanced early military service with professional lifeguarding roles.” grokipedia.com/page/mel_andre…

Alysa Liu recently went viral for her *surprising* Teen Vague rant on the use of AI in hardware design "you're trying to automate pcb design with current tech. Sure an LLM can read datasheets and symbolically wire up a schematic, but laying out a board? That's a completely different story. Besides this isn't software, you'd also need to automate debugging of hardware and accelerate pcb building cycles to make a sizable dent on development speed"

When I apply for professorships I like to leave a little typo or two in my materials as a kind of bounty and if the committee finds it they get to hire me. My own little game show where I am the prize ♡

Human history is in fact teleological but its purpose is to reinvent cybernetic socialism every fifty years ad infinitum only more idiotic each time.

Ted Chiang responds to the article going around that asks if the left is missing out on AI: “I don’t know. Is the left missing out on ICE?”

@bayesianboy The problem with ICE isn't that it's stupid, though, at least from the left's pov. (And, maybe, but incuriosity is the issue. You can't even have a good position on whether it's stupid if you don't work to keep up with it and understand it.)

@DruckerDaniel I don’t know. I think it’s possible to believe that something exists, to have a deep and nuanced understanding of it in fact, and still find it stupid.

Went into a workshop at Stanford on the neural manifold hypothesis ready to disabuse neuroscientists of their platonic fantasies and left much more open-minded with regards to both their ontic status and explanatory power.
