Peloton CMO Megan Imbres praises Hudson Williams when discussing their ‘Let Yourself Go’ campaign, and says the video’s performance exceeded expectations “I knew it was going to connect. I did not think it was going to connect at the level that it has.” After they landed on the instructors [which would feature in the video], Imbres and her team started brainstorming for the lead. The Peloton team “wanted someone multifaceted” to represent the various styles of training Peloton offers, and Williams was a “no-brainer.” “He’s someone who just did a Balenciaga campaign, someone who’s really high-fashion and being very choiceful about who he works with”, she said. On top of that, talent doesn’t come cheap. Luckily, Williams as already a fan of Peloton, and Imbres said he liked the campaign concept when the brand team pitched it to him through his manager. But I’ve talked about before, how in the time between Heated Rivalry and The Long Game, my own child was getting assessed for things like ADHD and autism. I learned a lot over those few years, and then I was like, ‘Oh yeah, Shane is autistic.’ By the time I wrote The Long Game, I was like, yeah, that’s what it is.” “Jacob knew right away. Jacob told me I think in the very first Zoom call, he was like, ‘Well, Shane’s autistic.’ He’s definitely approached the character that way. And when I talked to Hudson about it, he said the same thing. He was like, ‘Well, Shane is very autistic.’ We’d have a discussion about something where Connor might say something about Shane and I heard Hudson be like, ‘No, no, [he’s] doing that because he’s autistic.’ And I was like, ‘Yes, yes.’” “I think because of that, which unfortunately is also common of people with autism, the things that Shane does and says get misunderstood, sometimes by characters in the book and sometimes by readers who are like, ‘Well, that was a terrible thing to say or do.’ And it’s like, well, he’s not great at reading social cues. He’s got a lot of internalised anxiety. He’s very particular about certain things. Things bother him that don’t bother other people. By highlighting these other dimensions, the show allows his autism to be just another facet—a part of the whole that makes up Shane Hollander.” [N]ormalizing autism in the media is essential for acceptance. “Making autism an everyday, normal part of the human experience is key to the world treating us as people who deserve to be living our lives, among our loved ones—not people to be pitied or looked down on, but as everyday people. Media representation, either coming directly from or with input from the autistic community, is a tool to combat fear of autistic people with acceptance,” says Noor Pervez, community engagement coordinator at the Autistic Self-Advocacy Network (ASAN). “I loved that the show featured someone with a successful family life, social life, and love life. There was acceptance—not pushing it to the background or making fun, but acknowledgment in a way that felt loving and supportive. Here’s someone with autism who might be socially awkward at times or struggle to make eye contact, but it’s still fine to those who care about him. He gets to be successful and be a regular person. I thought that was huge for the neurodivergent community: We can know someone is autism-coded without it being ‘a portrayal of autism,’” says Kate Hanselman, PMHNP. “Many stereotypes paint autistic people as either uninterested in or incapable of romantic relationships.
