I don't have any immediate plans to leave Twitter, but I did set up shop at @colomon@wandering.shop and DreamWidth also as colomon.

MetaAI confidently explained the "general consensus" of what the (mind you, purely instrumental) tune is about, commenting repeatedly on the non-existent lyrics. (And yes, I double-checked, and doesn't seem to be a song of that name it could be getting confused with.) 4/4

MetaAI will offer explanations of things in Facebook posts, and if they're not super common knowledge, the explanation will frequently be entirely made up nonsense. For instance, a friend referenced the Irish jig "Old Gold Ring" in a post... 3/n

@JonahDispatch Dude, ChatGPT-style AI just doesn't work for getting information. Figured this out years ago, when everyone was excited about it translating Beowulf into "frat boy". That seemed superficially impressive, but got the plot of Beowulf wrong in big ways. 1/n

@newbiedm It’s been hugely popular at our house, but… sad old man that I am, I keep on sleeping through half of each episode. Going to have to go back and rewatch everything in the morning or something like that…

This week's new episode of Skeleton Crew was probably the best one yet. A lot of fun. #starwars

@SecretSunBlog Seeing ravens talk always reminds me of one of the greatest series of books ever written: Gene Wolfe's The Book of the Long Sun. Oreb is my favorite character. If you know, you know.

@johnlk_80 @ArmandDoma Because their incentive is to produce something that sounds good to people whose understanding of basic economics is almost completely broken?

@ArmandDoma Why do they always propose the absolute stupidest replacements for the income tax when a VAT is already a thing that exists in many places?

Replacing the income tax with tariffs would a) be the largest tax hike on everyone but the super rich in American history and b) be impossible because if tariffs are high enough people stop buying imports which kills tariff revenue
Kevin Beebe, CPA@kevin_b_b6

The IRS wouldn’t need to touch your earnings at all – taxes would come in at ports of entry instead. No complex, opaque system, just straightforward tariffs collected on imports, leaving American-made goods untouched by these tax burdens.

@InTheRoud @bellowheaduk I like "Rosemary Lane" but don't think about it much. "Greenwood Side" is absolutely fabulous. Love how it builds; love how it messes with the form of the song so that sometimes the second line of the verse is refrain, sometimes verse; love the lyrics they've chosen.

@SirTimRice .... huh. Wanted to confidently say yes. But then I stopped and thought about it, and I'm not sure. Google search suggests it is indeed yes. But of course, that's trusting the Internet to know something...

This was so fascinating. I had a teflon knitting needle on @ISS and charged it by rubbing with my Russian fur boots. Then I directed water droplets from a syringe towards the charged knitting needle and this is the resulting dynamics. The droplets, due to charge forces, go into a crazy orbit around the knitting needle. If planets were cylindrical this would be the orbit of its moons due to gravity. @TradSongTues Hey hey! My friend Heather had the liner notes handy. It was written by Alfred Whiffen, who was part of a crew of a boat which monitored the fires and helped evacuate people. He was collected singing the song too, it's at 3:58 on egrove.olemiss.edu/kgreels_can/8/

It's also on the album "Mentioned in Song" (there sung by Bernice Duke) which we own, but I have no idea where in our house the extensive liner notes are. Will try to track down more information later today.
