Today marks 7 years since a fatal day in our nation’s history. Recently, I moved to Chard - a small market town in rural Somerset. As today is the anniversary of the referendum, I’m going to highlight 7 ways the European Union has contributed to this town of 13,000 🧵[1/9]

I have no love lost over the exit of a Labour Prime Minister, but this is an absolutely atrocious, disrespectful way of going about it. A man who seeks the office of Prime Minister simply to satisfy his own personal ego doesn't deserve to ever hold the title.

Today, the European Union took a major step forward. All Member States agreed to open the first accession negotiations cluster with Ukraine and Moldova. At the first Intergovernmental Conference on Monday, we will open the cluster on fundamentals; the backbone of the accession process. After every Russian escalation into a NATO country we hear leaders repeating the mantra "We stand with..." But we could do much more than standing around. For example — we could create a European-Ukrainian defense union. Fund it with confiscated Russian frozen assets. Close the skies in Ukraine, making Ukraine and other frontline states safer. These things are very possible and this work could start today. Instead, I am sadly reminded of how Britain and France “stood with” Poland in 1939 while that country was being dismembered. It was called the Phony War, because mere declarations of “support” mean very little on the ground, and do nothing to prevent real war. Actions always speak louder than words, and usually cost much less than inaction.
