According to Hesiod's *Theogony* (lines ~274-280), Perseus "cut off her head" — no motive, quest, or justification is given at all. Medusa is called the Gorgon "who suffered a woeful fate," noted as the only mortal one (her sisters immortal), with Poseidon having lain with her beforehand. From her neck sprang Pegasus and Chrysaor. The full Polydectes/quest story is later.

To kill, I believe it was Ceto the sea monster and save said Father In Law’s Daughter…which I’m assuming Medusa would have been unwilling to do…which implies she wasn’t really keen on helping anyone, and heroes in the past had gone to slay her, further implying they had a reason to do so, meaning neither innocent nor victim.

Mostly correct. The gorgons were monsterous and fierce. They were used as symbols to ward off evil. The victimhood of Medusa is implied in Hesiod. He mentions her being killed by Perseus but mentions no righteous justification for it. As far as we know, Perseus did it because his father in law asked him to.

I hate having to go to definitions but... A villain is a malicious person or fictional character who deliberately commits evil acts, breaks the law, or serves as the primary antagonist opposing a story's hero. If you do no evil, you are not evil and cannot be a villian by definition. You are trying to use a bizzare definition of villian that only you hold on to (like your little cock when you wank)

@RealKrissy275 @lordvictor It's not just me. It's the data. The gorgons were scary until the 5th century BCE where even that changed. They were never considered "evil" by any data I'm aware of. You are otherwise correct about the monsterous part.

@moestopthat @lordvictor oh, so you are not talking about actual data that reflects reality or backs up your claims. "because she’s normally viewed as a villain?" Incorrect. Historically, there is no data that supports this.

@moestopthat @lordvictor Being fiersome is the same as being a villian? You failed villain school didn't you? All the gods were fiersome, but they didn't look such. The gorgons looked fierce, which is why they were used to ward off evil. Are pitbulls villianous? They sure are fierce to enemies.

WRONG. Hesiod doesn't describe her as a villian. Homer doesn't either. In the 5th centuries BCE, they even started portraying the gorgons as less "terrible" looking. I don't know of a single ancient source where any of the gorgons are "villians". You don't use a villian to ward off evil.

@deepglugs @lordvictor again she’s still been portrayed as a villain so the one of few times she isn’t everyone needs a dissertation on why it makes sense lmfao AGAIN it’s just people being happy she isn’t consistently villainized lmao

Please check your sources. This is incorrect. The gorgons were "terrible" and "fierce" but not considered "evil". They were used symbolically to ward off evil. They made coins with the gorgon head on them and Athena had a shield with the Gorgon head. I don't think the gorgons were considered evil until fairly recently.

@lordvictor The original mythology is she was born an evil monster. A roman poet retold the story to she was a rape victim for his story and feminists chose to say that was the OG to push a stupid all men are bad argument

@moestopthat @lordvictor But she's never viewed as a villain outside of DC comics and the Clash of the Titans (both versions). The visage of the gorgon was a symbol to ward off evil. Athena had a shield with a gorgon head and coins were made with the gorgon. Not exactly something you do for a villian

There is no myth of Medusa or any of the gorgon being "evil". They are grim and fierce (as is the root of the word gorgon), but never described as evil. In fact, they were used as wards against evil. Athena had a gorgon visage on her shield and coins were made with gorgon heads on them.

@lordvictor Medusa wasn't "raped by Poseidon." it was Neptune who did it, because the "raped by Neptune" story is from Roman adaptations of the original greek mythology. Originally she was a primeval gorgon and pure evil. Even in the Ovid version where she's a victim she behaves monstrous.

@lordvictor Their stupid asses are always going by the late Roman version of her being raped by Poseidon. Medusa was born a Gorgon. She wasn't inherently evil, but her gaze turned anyone to stone. She couldn't control it.
