@IndieLauraSDG Okay, but 90% of indies are also crap and everyone knows it. Not like people think the incredible volume of shovelware on Steam, technically indie, will do any "saving". People just mean good games that everyone wants to play will be small team endeavors.

The game industry is NOT going to be saved by “indies.” 90% of indies are woke AF and many of them were the ring leaders of cancel culture in the last decade. And they are still covertly running the same playbook on the DL. They’re less insulated from consequences than they used to be, but they haven’t changed a bit. They still have their whisper networks and operate exactly as before. They’re just waiting things out and consolidating their centers of power. Expect it to be 100x worse if they succeed. If the game industry is going to be restored to its former glory, it will NOT be built on the backs of most indie devs or any of the people who capitulated and cowered in fear of being canceled. It will be built on the backs of the passionate 10% of devs who were the targets of relentless cancellation and exclusion by the woke majority and had the balls to keep going anyway. If you ask any honest game studio owner, they know what it's like to work with woke devs. They are mentally unstable, have no empathy or ethics, and they’re a cancer to studio culture and morale, as well as creativity and innovation. This is why we see game companies imploding left and right. The good news is that everyone now knows selling out to wokeness was a terrible business model, and even the money people are waking up to this now, so that’s hopeful. The future of gaming belongs to the passionate devs who’ve been suppressed by the infrastructure of woke devs, media, and funding for the last decade. It’s your time now. ✊🏼

@ArturSmiarowski @SandyofCthulhu I'm convinced that MMOs started to die when they made the decision that the majority of the players should see all of the content. It made every single game feel smaller and less alive.

@SandyofCthulhu I gave up when MMOs optimized the social aspect away from most of their content in favor of a more convenient grind and progression. Single-player RPGs offered better stories, and PvP was better in MOBAs. The only thing left was raiding and big battles like in Warhammer.

This is how I gave up on MMOs. Years ago, the new Demon invasion upgrade came out for WOW, with all these new worlds, and astounding demonic monsters. So when I reach 80th level, I travel through the mighty demon gate to the new world, fight my way past the wandering horrors, and find a goblin with a quest. He wants me to collect 12 hot wings for him. It's the exact same quest I had at level 1. And level 12. And level 50. argh.

Once upon a time I did some writing for some minor gaming news site, and what I noticed from the English Majors: Games were art, they were every bit as important to culture as music, great novels, on par with Citizen Kane, Beethoven and Moby Dick. At least, when it come to whether being a games journalist was prestigious. When it came to inserting their politics into games or their journalism, games were toys, they were totally unimportant compared to anything else that really mattered.

Personal agendas should never come before the company.

everyone uses the phrase to paint “the masses” as idiots but if there was a free circus with bread near your house you would absolutely go.

@DAKKADAKKA1 Steam's one of the only companies where everyone agrees they're pretty much a monopoly, but most people are fine with it because it's been an asset and the guy running it is seems cool. (Inb4 'I'm an indie dev and the Steam cut is destroying my take for my vibe coded nonsense')

I had resisted trying Claude Code because I was a cheapskate working through Cursor, and I didn't realize Claude Code only throttled you when you went over the limit, rather than charging you a fortune. I am now just creating app after app I want using Claude Code. Projects that would have been a weekend just glide. Nothing too complicated right now, but it really is amazing.

What people don't realize is that any new tool that makes something more accessible to the masses creates 99% slop and 1% gold. This is obviously true of the Internet, and it will be true of AI too. The gold outweighs the slop.

@Grummz Not just getting laid. It's also because they're afraid of screaming or tears. And if that doesn't shellshock them enough, the realization that a sobbing woman is trying to summon a (male) authority figure adds to the stress.

Men white knight and support Karens because they hope to get laid. It’s that simple. If they actually told them off for their stupid ideas, the Karens would poison other women against them. Or lie to cancel them. For this reason, much of civilization is crumbling.

@kramps1066 @Grummz I'm not worried about gaming anyway, I picked up what I did because I do a lot of Blender / AI experimentation as a hobby. I walked away from AAA gaming long ago, and if this makes devs optimize, at least that's a plus.

Look, DRAM and rumors of 5090's going to $5000 get clicks, but they are overblown. It will be okay. 2026 will be the year we enjoy the hardware we have and our back catalog. 2027 things will be very different and cool. We got this, gamers.

@Grummz Even if insect-based diets were incredibly healthy, cheap and could be made in a palatable way... we live in a world where most news is delivered by engagement farmers. And those people all pitched the thing in as off-putting a way as possible, even when they were positive.

Some tech predictions for 2026: * AI will continue to grow in utility, but larger companies will be hurt by it rather than gain from it, as the productivity increases AI offers will lessen the need for large, sprawling corporations to begin with. The exception will be for companies that own and use their own manufacturing hardware or other tangible assets. * Social media will be so plagued by AI chat bots, engagement farming and spam that a multitude of alternatives to the most popular social media platforms will rise up. They will be far more fragmented, more heavily policed, and intentionally lacking in features that people now believe for granted (clickable links, posting emojis/images). "Building an audience" will undergo a transformation. * Small businesses will proliferate and see enormous gains, and be able to outcompete larger companies more and more. * Related to this, local models will get powerful enough that API usages will see a strange decline, as companies and businesses start to reason that it's more desirable to lean on local models that are "good enough" for all kinds of tasks, and much more easy to modify, rather than leaning on an API that is limited, censored, and dubiously private. * AI Models will begin to be far more specialized, and running a swarm of models that can each handle particular tasks extremely well will become more advantages than large multimodal models. * The most valuable skills that employers will seek out won't be any particular education or certification, but drive and adaptability. Except for the highest ends, expertise in general will be devalued as LLMs are seen as a suitable replacement for it. The question will be whether someone given a task can integrate AI and see through the task to the end rather than getting bored, frustrated, or giving up.

@Pirat_Nation AI usage is going to primarily favor small indie devs, and I welcome that insofar as they deliver quality and polished stuff. Otherwise this is just going to turn into an attempt at cultural gatekeeping on behalf of corporate and "Kotaku preferred" indies who use it too.
