This is actually pretty simple. Until a few years ago, Sonic was almost only represented by games in Japan, and most of those had very limited production runs, so they were rarely available in game stores. There were no comics, very little merchandise, and almost no support from Sega outside the games. Basically, the only way to get into Sonic was through the games, but those games weren’t easy to access. There were also almost no TV or web ads, and no comics, so most people only knew Sonic from Smash Bros. or Mario & Sonic. But in recent years, most of these problems have been solved. There are now many events, much more content outside the games, and while Japan still lags behind some other regions, it’s clear that new fans are starting to appear. Sonic has only just reached the starting line in Japan, so I think it needs a little more time.
