There are many ways to get across the point of distortion in the Mercator map. Here's a planisphere indicating a distance across Africa and another distance across Russia and things don't add up

I just watched the Chinese film "Creation of Gods I," the first of a trilogy based on the Investiture of the Gods (封神榜), a 16th-century Chinese epic high-fantasy novel in the gods and demons genre.
With its blend of history, folklore, mythology, fantasy, and literature, this Chinese film has the potential to help non-Chinese viewers get a deeper appreciation for Chinese culture, much like The Lord of the Rings did for Chinese viewers' familiarity with Western culture and traditions.
In recent years, the Chinese film industry has made significant strides toward expanding its international market. However, it has not done enough to localize the content and assist foreign audiences comprehend it, which is especially problematic for films that feature too many Chinese cultural elements. In the hopes of preparing any foreigner who may be interested in watching the film, I have decided to provide a brief cultural introduction to the film's setting and primary characters.
🔵 Investiture of the Gods 封神榜
The story begins with a list of the Gods' names. A heavenly treasure, the list contains the names of 365 deities, and is placed on a lofty tower reserved for the investiture of the Gods. The souls of those Gods who perished in the wars are brought there to await their investiture.
The story is reminiscent of the Valhalla in Nordic mythology, where individuals who fought honorably and died in battle could enter. The main difference is that in the Chinese version, the souls who died in the war will become Gods, whereas the souls in Valhalla will be reborn and fight once more for Ragnarök.
🔵 Shang and Zhou dynasties 商朝与周朝
The story takes place during the decline of the Shang dynasty (1600-1046 BC) and the beginning of the Zhou dynasty (1046-256 BC). King Shou of Shang, the last ruler of the Shang dynasty, who was cruel and bloodthirsty, was deposed and replaced by King Wu of Zhou, the first king of the Zhou dynasty, a regime renowned for its benevolence toward its subjects.
Most Chinese people have heard of those two rulers, and their legacy lives on in modern China. As a common expression, "wine pool and meat forest" (酒池肉林) is used to describe corrupt or decadent situations in both Chinese and Japanese languages. King Shou of Shang is credited with coining the idiom; he constructed a big pool full of wine and a little island made of barbecued meat skewers. The king enjoyed canoeing and swimming in the wine pool. He and his concubines drank from the pool and feasted on the island.
🔵 Chinese ritual bronzes and Oracle bone script 青铜器与甲骨文
In the movie, ritual bronzes (青铜器) are commonplace and can transform into monsters to hunt humans, while Chinese seers consult oracle bones (甲骨文) to divine the future. Interestingly, the most prominent cultural manifestations of the Shang and Zhou dynasties are ritual bronzes and oracle bone inscriptions.
Ritual bronzes create quite an impression both due to their sophistication of design and manufacturing process, but also because of their remarkable durability. At least initially, the production of bronze was probably controlled by the ruler, who gave unformed metal to his nobility as a sign of favour. The technology of bronze production was described in the Kao Gong Ji (考工记) compiled some time between the fifth and third centuries BCE.
The oracle bone script was an early form of Chinese writing that was used to inscribe animal and turtle plastrons for pyromantic divination. The earliest known type of Chinese writing is the Oracle bone script, which was employed in the late 2nd millennium BC. It is also the direct ancestor of over a dozen East Asian writing systems created over the next three millennia, including the Chinese and Japanese logographic and syllabic scripts still in use today.

Announcing:
RedPajama, a project to create leading open-source models, starts by reproducing LLaMA training dataset of over 1.2 trillion tokens.
Foundation models such as GPT-4 have driven rapid improvement in AI. However, the most powerful models are closed commercial models or only partially open. RedPajama is a project to create a set of leading, fully open-source models. Today, we are excited to announce the completion of the first step of this project: the reproduction of the LLaMA training dataset of over 1.2 trillion tokens.
The most capable foundation models today are closed behind commercial APIs, which limits research, customization, and their use with sensitive data. Fully open-source models hold the promise of removing these limitations, if the open community can close the quality gap between open and closed models. Recently, there has been much progress along this front. In many ways, AI is having its Linux moment. Stable Diffusion showed that open-source can not only rival the quality of commercial offerings like DALL-E but can also lead to incredible creativity from broad participation by communities around the world. A similar movement has now begun around large language models with the recent release of semi-open models like LLaMA, Alpaca, Vicuna, and Koala; as well as fully-open models like Pythia, OpenChatKit, Open Assistant and Dolly.
We are launching RedPajama, an effort to produce a reproducible, fully-open, leading language model. RedPajama is a collaboration between Together, Ontocord.ai, ETH DS3Lab, Stanford CRFM, Hazy Research, and MILA Québec AI Institute. RedPajama has three key components:
1Pre-training data, which needs to be both high quality and have broad coverage
2Base models, which are trained at scale on this data
3Instruction tuning data and models, which improve the base model to make it usable and safe
Today, we are releasing the first component, pre-training data.
