There is something interesting to note here with Toby Fox's lie in his response.
The excuse he gave for the reason why there was only a Japanese version of Undertale localized in the first place is because he "actually know the language" and therefore, be more comfortable to work on it as it's conception.
However, it could be verified that Toby hasn't properly started learning Japanese until the next year after the official Japanese localizion of Undertale has released (August 16, 2017), and has only able to be proficient enough in the language to help directly with the translation by the time he worked on Deltarune.
With part of the process of the localization being officially stated: "Before Undertale's English release, Toby told me that he intended to release the game in Japanese sometime. He faced some big questions, though. How do you get a game translated and localized? And how do you ensure the final product is good if you don't even know the language yourself?"
And for a tweet: "Even back when I was translating Undertale, I actually mistook Toby for someone who was already intimately familiar with Japanese...That's how committed to the Japanese version he was, it was quite amazing. (And now, in the space of only one year, he's already become "intimately familiar" with it, to the point it blew me away...)"
Toby Fox is lying, most likely unintentionally, but it's still not exactly a white lie. The one excuse he has is faulty, and it leads to the truth of it seeming just out of favoritism. The personal interest that drove him to undertake that process for Japanese did not exist for other languages. This isn't bad in itself, but the excuse he uses frames him as more altruistic than what is actually the case.
And this also disproves the notion that the process of localizing other language couldn't be done without prior fluency, since his own Japanese localization proves it is possible without prior fluency.
Thai distinction wouldn't necessarily matter if it didn't make a difference, but that is tht opposite for the case. It puts him at a more favorable light even despite the actual logistic issues being valid for why he can't pursue it. It should be correct into the actual reason, I think, despite it being a less favorable framing because it locates the cause in his choices rather than in his circumstances, and it invites other overseas fans to ask why their community did not merit the same investment rather than accepting that the investment was simply never possible.

So you're saying that when you leave translation to unrelated third parties, they result is massive inaccuracies which upset many people? If only Toby had a translator who could have accurately intepretted his words to avoid this. However, such a thing is clearly impossible.
sof ★@akisgyro
@Monki_doodles i think this literally all stems from a mistranslation 😭 there was a tweet that blew up massively that translated tobys posts, and they said that toby said "NO TRANSLATIONS FOR PORTUGESE OR SPANISH" (incorrect), and it also said it was because he couldn't achieve his (1/2)

He talks about translation as if translators were just bilingual people saying words and not actual professionals who spend years getting a degree to be able to do their job. Translation leads exist for a reason, they’re the bridge between the client and the translators-

I’m ngl I think he really just needs to ease up on this
Like dude the translators JOB is to display your vision in the language like you don’t trust them even a *little* bit??
I get Deltarune as it’s in active development, but undertale shouldve had more translations AWHILE ago

Its the same logic lmao cause if a translator does something stupid that misinterprets the dialogue how is toby supposed to know, in the same way that google translate or whatever misgendered toby by accident in the post

Sorry but his statement is so nothingburger. Trying to discuss other languages with a japanese-english localization company? Ofc it wont work??? Even IF they do translations in other languages, jp-eng is eng-jp is clearly their focus and specialty.
Out of all people there is no way YOU dont have the ability to figure something out or know someone that does. You may not have control over the planning of the symphony event but your word would make all the difference. This statement is so half-assed and full of excuses.
Like its so obviously just wanting it to blow over so bad idk 😭 you wanna be treated like an indie developer when that just isnt the case anymore, sorry.
Dont forget that most fangamer merch (clothing is made in latam) and youre charging exorbitant prices to ship to them?
No one said you hold a grudge or that youre racist but its clearly something you dont care enough to acknowledge or do anything about. Its weird.
Im not even latam. Im arab in the middle east. I know we’ll never get anything in here but if we can make it better for at least one region thats all that matters to me.
