I used to find the British pronunciation silly until I realized Italian: /a/ General American: /ɑ/ RP: /æ/ Neither of us are saying it faithfully to the Italian, but our incorrectness is in *different directions* so to each other we sound even more incorrect and silly

@ipnotjcaa @quasistable no, in fact it's the opposite, British /æ/ is less open than Italian /a/ (or /ä/) which are equally as open as /ɑ/, at least when just looking at the trapezoid. British /æ/ is more open than American /æ/ though iirc. Not sure.
