bad chess joke of the day Why does converting a Q vs. R endgame feel so boring sometimes? Because it's a 9 to 5 job

I have just finished a break from work and starting today, I am back working on courses, updates - basically not exiting my cave for the next 3-4 months. Shocking thing today. The best move according to the engines in the diagram position is 3...d4 which is obvious - we will play ...c5 and ...Nc6 and then usually ...b6 ...Bb7 while on the kingside we can adjust to what White is doing. But the shocking info is that engines claim that 3...f5!? is Black's 2nd best move. It looks ridiculous but the point is that closing the position is poor for White while 4.exf5 exf5 threatens ...d4 so 5.d4 Nf6 is basically a must when Black has a more pleasant game due to White's misplaced knight on c3. Never in my life had I seen such a motif on such an early stage.

Just pointing out the amazing work being done in 🇯🇵 every round: 📺Streaming the Japanese teams' games 🎤2-person commentary team Most amazing of all...games start 10pm 🇯🇵 time, and they go until the end, even if it's 3:30am. Phenomenal work in a country where chess is small!

9th World Champion Tigran Petrosian was perhaps the biggest master of exchange sacrifices in chess history. Here are 23 of his wins involving these sacs against world-class opposition, mostly as Black! lichess.org/study/ewuDxkFS

@juntaikeda @ImShahinyan It's fascinating that none other than Lasker, a very practical player, valued the kingside pieces a bit more highly. Anyway, perhaps time for a substack update?? ;)

Read in @GMJacobAagaard's A Matter of Endgame Technique today, "Typically, we say that the king is worth 4 pawns in the endgame." This was news to me, while some people told me they'd heard of it. Did you know?

@billforsternz I heard from a Japanese player who read a Japanese book on chess published in 1975 that mentioned this concept - looks like it might be in a few books!

@ImShahinyan Interesting! Somehow I'd never put a number to the king, though of course I've played many endgames knowing it becomes powerful, hard to know if hearing of some estimated value early on would have changed my chess in any way :P

This is a really interesting topic! :) When I was 7, I started to learn chess. My coach told me that the king is worth 3 points (not 0, or immortal :) ), and he explained this by bringing up examples of different endgames. And I think this is an interesting approach, as students will feel the importance of the king right from the beginning.
