Wow 😂 Coinbase $COIN CEO Brian literally got distracted during the earnings call to check a prediction market on what he was gonna say… then went ahead and said every single word people were betting on.

The Kobeissi Letter

It's already starting: Google is officially purchasing nuclear power. Bloomberg is now reporting that NextEra Energy, $NEE, plans to restart a nuclear power plant in Iowa, primarily to supply Google data centers. The 615-megawatt plant shut down in 2020, well before the AI boom, and is expected to start delivering power by 2029. NextEra's stock is up sharply on the news because it foreshadows what's coming next for AI. The world simply does NOT have enough power to continue scaling AI growth at its current pace. Nuclear energy is the most promising solution to our global energy shortage. Power will be the most valuable commodity in the world.
The Kobeissi Letter@KobeissiLetter

AI growth is exploding: The US now has 5,426 data centers, more than ALL other major countries COMBINED. And, there are $40 BILLION worth of US data centers under construction, up +400% since 2022. This will soon reshape the global economy. What's next? Let us explain.

The maker of Oreos has trained their own video model for television advertising. They have invested $40 million, and say it cuts production costs by 30-50%. Video models are continuing to advance at a rapid rate, by next year it will be difficult to tell if an ad is AI generated.

@kursed I think for certain query types where real information can ONLY be put together by doing things or actual actions like gaming/ travelling - for these kinds of queries AI Overviews either shouldn't be shown or at least the position shouldn't be top of results.

bed overheated because AWS-east was down. but um....... its good because it alerted them to the outage? i dont even know what to do with this shit
Guillermo Rauch@rauchg

I want to specially thank the @vercel team for working around the clock to keep customers safe and available. In fact, I was sleeping, it was 2am~ ish, and I was alerted about this issue because my internet mattress (which I love, shoutout to @eightsleep) was warm 😅, which led me to opening the app… I notice there's an ongoing AWS outage. I open HN and it's there too. I go to our incidents channel. A dozen incidents had been automatically filed by our systems, later merged, and failover and service restoration was well underway by on-call teams. us-east-1 is not fully back. There are lingering networking issues and throttled creation of resources (e.g.: EC2). These incidents take a lot of work to recover from, which the Vercel team is taking care of right now. I'm extremely thankful to them and our partners at AWS.

@gaganghotra_ It’s exactly that, else it’s practically feeding wrong info to users.

@gaganghotra_ True but that’s not it, it’s changing specific details of guides too now, making up functions in a game that don’t exist mostly because AI isn’t capable of playing video games yet. And if a guide already doesn’t exist, chances of hallucinations off a single piece skyrocket.

yep I also think so! and at the same time I think it's just technical failure or negligence in testing AI Overviews answers cuz for these specific queries it know the numbers are there on page but it's still showing like 6 instead of 9 which is on page but citing that page at the same time!!

@gaganghotra_ My current predicament is that people will attribute errors to the website, given link attribution, not the AI itself. If it’s just the AI getting all the blame, hallucinations simply means users - specially gamers/techies/pro users etc - will get disillusioned fast.

@kursed 😓 we pretty much can't do anything - Google should get it's act together and make sure that it's picking up right info from page & showing it to users rather than hallucinating data points.

@gaganghotra_ So, we have now seen AI overview attribute a wrong rating to a review and in another instance change details of a guide (completely messing it up for end user) within the overview - I wonder what sort of ‘helpful’ content does this count as. :)

@kursed yep for publishers it's not that great tradeoff but for now blocking the bots isn't right either because that means all the mentions/citations in the answers will get changed to just competitors. If people not seeing brand that also hurt long term brand value.
