Rain and thunderstorms are expected to impact New York City on Monday as a strong cold front moves through the region. Rain may begin as early as Sunday evening around 7 PM and continue overnight into early Monday morning. Periods of moderate rain are likely through the morning commute. Conditions become more active Monday afternoon as the front approaches. Scattered thunderstorms are possible during the day, with the greatest chance for stronger storms Monday evening. The highest risk period appears to be between about 5 PM and 10 PM Monday. During this time, heavier downpours, gusty winds, and thunderstorms are possible as the cold front moves through the area. Rainfall totals are expected to average around 1 to 1.2 inches across the city, with locally higher totals up to around 1.5 inches where thunderstorms develop. Most rainfall rates will stay under a quarter inch per hour, but heavier showers could briefly produce rates close to 1 inch per hour. Localized flooding is possible, especially in low lying areas, underpasses, and locations with poor drainage. Ponding on roadways may develop during heavier downpours. South to southeast winds will increase during the day Monday and may gust up to around 50 mph during the evening as the front passes. Monday temperatures will reach the low 60s before cooler air moves in behind the front late Monday night. Rain and storms gradually taper overnight Monday into early Tuesday morning.
