Some of you don’t know the style that brought you into this world. Me: Missionary.

We were on first-semester break in the university and almost everyone had gone home. That morning, I was in the kitchen cooking yam and beans for myself and my elder sister. The food was almost done when my phone rang, it was my guy Tayo Tayo: How far, Labi? Me: I dey, brother. How e be? Tayo: Where you dey? I get surprise for you. Me: I dey house o, jami omoya mi. Tayo: I just buy car! All the boys dey here. Na only you we still dey wait. Me: Ehn? How come? But abeg I dey cook, hunger dey wire me. I go reach there once I don chop. Tayo: Forget that one. Come chop real food and wine here, na celebration mood we dey. Me: Oya oya, I dey come. Gbayi padi mi. Since most of our friends lived in the same state, linking up was easy. When I got there, everyone was shouting: “Oh boy! How you take do am?” After all, we were just undergraduates with no job. Tayo explained that his elder brother got a huge gig, and he worked with the team—so he used his share to buy the car. We believed him. We were happy for him. Vibes everywhere. Boys dey ginger Everyone: “When we resume, we go use this car cruise girls scatter” Awa didinrin. 😂 After some time, I said, “Guy, me I dey H o, make we enter food and wine now.” Ibadan people go sabi this place for challenge But Tayo insisted we should first stop at a kpo joint to “open appetite” with some pelebe (sachet gin). I noticed Tayo kept getting calls he refused to pick, but I thought he just didn’t want distraction. Then suddenly, we heard two bikes pulling up loudly “Vrooooom!” Three men jumped down — one elderly man and two younger guys. The elderly man walked straight to Tayo: Iwo omo yi, mo ran e lati gbe motor lo car wash lo fo lati aaro, O wa joko sibi pelu awon ore radarada yi! Fun mi ni kokoro moto mi!” (You this boy, I sent you to take this to the car wash since morning to wash, only for me to find you sitting at a joint with your useless friends! Give me my car key!) My brother… everywhere first blur 😂 It turned out Tayo hadn’t bought any car. His dad had just bought that car a few days earlier. Tayo was only supposed to take it to the car wash but instead he turned it into “celebration party” for boys. What scattered everything was that Tayo’s younger sister had passed the joint earlier on her way from the market. She saw the car parked there, went home, and reported immediately. And just like that… kasala burst. Naso our dreams of cruising the car next semester dashed Tayo, because of you, I trekked 6 kilometers home with hunger knocking my stomach like landlord wey want rent. My eleda will judge you o 😂
