if your terminal output freezes when you press ctrl-S you can resume it with ctrl-Q or just disable it completely: stty -ixon or in zsh: setopt noflowcontrol maybe add that to your bash_profile/zshrc too and then you can use ctrl-S/ctrl-R for forward/reverse history search
