I get frustration from some Bears fans. They saw success of 2025 and believe the team is a few savvy moves from a title, with the DL most in need of retooling. But Ben is building the roster like it’s year two of his program and ignoring 2025 results. I trust his thinking.

I Yeah no “cap space” but surely @AdamSchefter knows you can restructure contracts, commit more money, and stay under the cap all at once. He knows #Bears dont have the means to do it and that is true whether or not he truly meant it

So there is an uproar after Adam Schefter said the Bears are broke. Relax. After making calls here’s the scoop. That was in reference to salary cap situation. They have whatever they need financially if Poles wants to make a move. We will discuss on @ESPN1000 Monday at 6 a.m.

So when you sign a player to a contract extension and you guarantee money to that player, that money has to be immediately available and go in an escrow account. So let's say they give Darnell Wright 4/120 with 80m gtd and next year give Caleb 4/260 with 200m gtd, George McCaskey has to have $80m in liquid cash for Wright and $200m in liquid cash for Caleb. That money goes into an escrow account so the player knows its there and accounted for. That's $280 million in cash that George needs in the next 15 months to pay those two players alone. It 100% impacts things.

The salary cap was $208m in 2022. It's $301m this year. That's a massive 44% increase in 4 years. I keep seeing "that's way too much money anyway" when players are signing deals. Adjust your thinking. This is the cost of doing business with a rapidly accelerating salary cap. If you want the Bears to compete with elite teams, they need to spend. Yes, they need to spend intelligently, but they can't just dip their toe in the water either. The cap isn't a myth, but it can be pretty easily manipulated if the owner is willing to spend the cash. I really don't want to hear about the cash they need available 12 months from now for Caleb's extension. If the Bears want to continue to operate that way, the mom and pop shop Bears aren't going to become yearly contenders. That's the mentality that keeps good teams from becoming great. Ownership matters. George has done a lot of good things over the last couple of years, but we need to see this mentality change, and change soon.
