Just to clarify my position on the whole bamboo scaffolding debate: 1. I absolutely love bamboo scaffolding – no question about it. 2. Strength, low cost, and ease of transport make it an ideal and highly practical resource in Hong Kong. On top of that, it has been used here for many decades and forms an important part of our city’s culture and heritage. 3. That said, while I’m genuinely fond of it, I am by no means an expert on the full biological or physical properties of bamboo. When I’ve described it as “flammable” in interviews, that has been based purely on gut feeling and a cautious “perhaps” when pressed by media outlets. Although bamboo is far from perfect, I do NOT believe it was the cause of the Tai Po fires, nor that it spread the blaze upwards and across the towers at Wang Fuk Court. Hong Kong has been using bamboo scaffolding for longer than most of us have been alive, and in all that time we have never seen a flood of reports blaming bamboo scaffolding for starting or fuelling major fires. If it were truly such a liability, how on earth have we managed to keep using it for so long? 4. Hong Kong may well decide to switch to metal scaffolding one day, but, like a great deal of things in my life - c’est la vie, that isn’t my decision to make. It will come down entirely to whether there is a genuine, proven need. 5. I’m an IT and digital-media professional, not an architect, structural engineer, or construction expert. Thank you! 😎🙏🏻 Godspeed. – Paul Marriott ❤️ to the victims of the Tai Po fire disasters. Heart and prayers go out to all of you. #taipo #hk #hongkong #wangfukcourt #bambooscaffolding #bamboo

@TWytrychowski Unfortunately, this is Hong Kong where space is scarce. Many things are packed together in one of the most densely populated cities, if not THE most densely populated cities in the world.

@pcmarriott That's why they should build separate buildings with some distance so the fire can't spread.

@pcmarriott Thanks Paul. By the way, can you help me to make a short interview by using Zoom? May be 15 to 20 minutes. I have a translator here with me who can speak Cantonese, so it is OK to speak in Cantonese through the Zoom interview.
