Dustin Johnson is defending his PhD dissertation now. Here @tcu, he explored antibacterial properties of metal oxide semiconductors. This included varying the sizes & shapes of nanoparticles, effecting the polarization of the particles, and measuring the impact on bacteria growth

One of my favorite early Val Kilmer appearances is in “Real Genius.” Val did something special with a typical 1980s cynical rebel/wisecracker role, giving his character a layer of big brother warmth. It’s actually kind of sweet.

@astrogrant 2 year cycle is a significant increase in risk for early career researchers(e.g. only two chances before tenure application, one chance as a postdoc, depending on gradation year).

I get that science changes fast, observatory lifetime is limited, new folks enter the field and want to propose, money on a 2 or 3 year period of performance, etc. A lot to think about, and I'm not sure the DDT model is necessarily right to support mid-cycle proposals, but ...

Genuinely think we need to try options like this. The proposal crush is hitting its limits for both proposers & reviewers. There are a ton of worthy, exciting proposals that die every year. Why not double the Cycle length, halve proposal call cadence, and hold a larger DDT pool?

It seems like the cover letter is the most mystifying component of job applications for academics, at least among the astro folks that I interact with. 🧵 on how to write a strong cover letter relevant for both postdoc and faculty jobs.
