If you think Evers is going to release a handful of inmates early, you’re clueless. Everything is pointing to the looming fast-track release of more violent prison inmates than this state has ever seen. Remember he promised to release half of the prison system. He just created a system that: 🔴 Doesn’t appear to require a hearing for every case. 🔴 Puts the obligation to notify the DA and judge on the inmate, not the state. 🔴 This notification can happen even just three weeks before the application is heard. 🔴 Requires the decisions to be made in closed session by an unaccountable board - they’re advisory to him (his judgment will supplant that of every judge in the state.) 🔴 Allows lifers convicted of murder to apply if they’ve served 20 years. Truth in sentencing is over as we know it. The law is still on the books, but Evers just created a massive end run around it, and don’t assume he won’t use it. He probably would have done it sooner except for our parole stories highlighting the heinous cases of killers his appointee was releasing (those paroles could only be for inmates sentenced before 2000, ie truth in sentencing.)
