A mini movie marathon with The Presidentโ€™s Cake and Hamnet today. The former was utterly soul crushing that the latter felt bearable. Had to be on my own for a moment after each viewing to recollect myself.

In his first feature, The President's Cake, set in Iraq in 1990, Hasan Hadi brings new style and new substance to a classic story of children fending for themselves amid social turmoil; now playing, highly recommended: newyorker.com/culture/the-frโ€ฆ

If your name is Jesus and you have a big dinner planned with your friends for next Thursday in a garden of some kind, DON'T GO. Those arenโ€™t your friends, boo. One of them will betray you. DM me for details.

โ€˜my father had a very minimum wage and was fine.โ€™ Your father was not fine. Your father had to give up things he wanted, sacrificed his own comfort for your own and stayed up late stressing over bills just so you could look back and think about how comfortable your life was.

in Al Ankabut God specifically chastises people who are deluded about faith. people who have a shallow, superficial understanding of what it means to believe. people who follow their forefathers blindly, who donโ€™t engage beyond the ritualistic and obvious elements of religion

some time ago, my parents insisted i improve my religious knowledge. sincerely, i looked for courses and found an english, academic course on the quran. when i showed this to my parents, they rejected me. what they meant was that i needed to improve my recitation, not knowledge.

Twitter used to be hospital gila online, yet right now here feels calm, like a place you would go untuk healing on a weekend. Threads on the other hand macam hospital gila yang terbakar di tengah pekan Gotham.

They didnโ€™t just k!ll him. They cut up & dissolved his body in acid. His k!llers kept his tooth as a trophy and his family only got it 61yrs later. A tooth. Thats all they have left of him. Belgium does not get enough hate imo.

Youโ€™re 35. Someone raises their voice and suddenly youโ€™re 7 years old again, sitting at the kitchen table, trying to disappear. Your brain is literally reverting to the age you were when the original wound happened. Neuroscientist Joseph LeDoux at NYU found that your brain has a fear shortcut. Sensory information hits your amygdala (the brainโ€™s alarm system) before it ever reaches the part that thinks logically. The alarm fires in about 12 milliseconds. Rational thought takes over 250. In someone carrying old trauma, the alarm wins every time. Your body reacts before your mind even knows what happened. Bessel van der Kolkโ€™s team put trauma survivors in brain scanners and watched what happens during a flashback. Three things go wrong at once. The amygdala floods the body with stress hormones, preparing you to fight or run. The prefrontal cortex, the part of your brain that says โ€œcalm down, youโ€™re safe, this is 2026,โ€ goes quiet. And Brocaโ€™s area, the region that lets you put thoughts into words, shuts off entirely. Van der Kolk compared it to having a stroke. Trauma survivors sitting frozen and silent in emergency rooms arenโ€™t choosing not to speak. The brain region for language has gone offline. The missing piece is the hippocampus. Itโ€™s the part of your brain that tags memories with a time and place, filing them as โ€œthis happened years ago.โ€ Chronic stress hormones physically shrink it. MRI scans of PTSD patients consistently show this. When your hippocampus canโ€™t do its job, your brain stops distinguishing a 20-year-old memory from something happening right now. Thatโ€™s why a slamming door in 2026 can put you right back in a room from 1998. Your brain genuinely cannot tell the difference. The CDC ran the largest study on childhood trauma ever done. 64% of American adults report at least one adverse childhood experience. Those who had four or more were 12 times more likely to attempt suicide, develop depression, or struggle with addiction. The annual cost: $14.1 trillion. The good news: this isnโ€™t always permanent. A study of PTSD patients found that after treatment, the hippocampus grew back by 4.6%. The part of the brain that files memories as โ€œthe pastโ€ can be rebuilt.

I watched โ€œHamnetโ€ at a screening. In just 126 minutes, it encapsulates all the sorrow, pain, loss, fear, love and joy, healing and hope found in life across all times and cultures. That beautiful final scene has the power to rewrite the history of cinema. Itย lays bareย the miracle of movies. Toย be able to create something like this, Chloรฉ Zhao must be a witch, or perhaps an angel.

โ€œThere are stories you want to tell, and stories that call you to tell.โ€ For director Hasan Hadi, โ€œThe Presidentโ€™s Cakeโ€ was the latter. A childhood memory from 1990s Iraq under Saddam Hussein becomes a story of survival, morality, and growing up. Supported by the Sundance Institute Labs, the film is now in select theaters via @sonyclassics. Read more: sndnc.org/4bqzhGx
