michael masi did exactly what formula 1, the fia, liberty media, jean todt, christian horner, helmut marko, derek warwick (the guy who publicly called it ‘the great white hope’), bernie ecclestone and plenty of others clearly wanted: a new champion. there is no rule anywhere in the regulations that says a race must finish under green flag. that was just the uncomfortable vibe after the absolute joke that was the spa 2021 belgian gp - three hours of waiting around in the rain for literally two slow laps behind the safety car, zero proper racing, and then half points handed out like it was a real race. masi took the call from horner and decided on the spot to improvise one single “racing lap” while completely ignoring the sporting regulations. article 48.12 is crystal clear: once the last lapped car has passed the leader, the safety car will return to the pits at the end of the following lap. this was straight-up daylight robbery, irrespective of anyone’s opinion. that’s exactly why michael masi lost his job and why the fia officially released a report admitting it was human error. niels wittich just didn’t want to put his employer in bad light. now some fans will jump in the replies and start abusing with stuff like “cry harder, 5 years btw” and spam those gifs of the race. well, they clearly don’t understand how real sport works. it’s a question of basic morals and ethics.
