EVAN [ #Heeseung ] W Korea July Issue Interview 💬 Your debut single, Ride or Die, comes out on June 22. It contains two tracks. Starting with the title track, Ride or Die, I was honestly surprised. It’s a rock song. Since people are used to EVAN’s R&B covers, I never expected you to debut with rock. — It's actually a song that came out during our very first session. Before that, I wouldn’t say I had a deep understanding of rock music. Then I started watching performances by Avril Lavigne and Radiohead on YouTube, and I completely fell for it. In a way, it’s a song born from pure desire. Rather than asking myself whether it was a genre I was good at, I just thought, “I love this, so let's try it.” These days, there are a lot of polished, perfectly mixed songs. Honestly, that’s mostly what I listened to as well. But band music felt organic and primal in a way. There was a moment when that feeling really hit me. 💬 “Ride or Die” means staying together until the very end. It's quite an intense title for a love song. — The message itself is incredibly strong, which is why I felt I had to use it. It’s also a thought I’ve genuinely had for a long time. As I’ve gone through different experiences and seen fans continue to support me, I started thinking, “I want to take these people with me all the way to the end.” That’s where the song began. 💬 You participated directly in the songwriting, lyrics, and production. What kind of sound and overall tone did you want to create? — The hook actually came to me in about 30 minutes while I was humming to myself. From there, I kept building on it. I didn’t want to focus solely on the rock sound. If there were elements that worked well with rock, I didn’t see any reason not to mix them in. That’t why I incorporated a bit of a dubstep vibe as well. For example, techniques like vocal chopping (cutting up vocal recordings and rearranging them) aren’t really used in rock music, but I included those elements too. To be honest, other than making sure there was an electric guitar, I didn’t place many restrictions on the song. The producers I worked with were probably pretty confused. They all had expressions like, “You’re mixing that with this?” (laughs) You know when the speaker output is pushed so hard that the equipment starts flashing red because it’s peaking? We kept hitting the peak, and I kept saying, “More. More. More.” Eventually one of them looked at me and said: “You crazy guy.” (laughs) 💬 So when you said before that you’re stubborn, it turns out you weren't kidding... (laughs) — I usually hide it well. (laughs) 💬 The other track, “Overflow,” is an easy-listening indie-pop song. A gentle guitar riff drifts over a very lo-fi soundscape. — It's a song that's a bit more emotionally expressive. Personally, I wrote it during a difficult period in my life. I was surrounded by countless emotions, but none of them seemed to be resolving themselves. At the time, a foreign lyricist I was working with casually suggested the word “overflow.” It means “to spill over” and the moment I heard it, I thought, “That’s it!" The verses begin as if there’s no hope at all, but in the hook, the phrase “Here we go again” keeps repeating and starts looking toward hope. Ultimately, it’s a story about overcoming hardship. 💬 At first listen it sounds like an easy-listening song, but if you really pay attention, it’s actually a very vocally elaborate track. Personally, when I listened to Ride or Die, I felt like EVAN was making the music he wanted to make. But with Overflow, it felt like EVAN was showing what he’s truly good at. — You listened really carefully. It feels like you genuinely paid attention. Because Ride or Die has a lot of high notes and powerful belting, it comes across as more intense. But if we’re talking about vocal range and technical difficulty, Overflow is actually much more challenging. It’s harder to sing in practice.

The W-Korea interview is making me cry! 😭🥹As a fan, this hits hard because you can really see how introspective and grounded he is. What I admire most about Evan is how deeply self-aware he is. He doesn’t romanticize the journey but he openly admits to fear, uncertainty, & fragility, yet he chooses to move forward anyway. That takes real courage! His answer about creating music to understand himself says so much about the kind of artist he is. For him, music is exploration, self-discovery & truth.
