Interesting that you say this… I’ve always had a deep affection for coffee plantations in Karnataka. In the 1960s, my parents acquired about 60 acres in Kodagu, near Nagarhole, and planted Arabica and Robusta saplings. It took five years for the first harvest, but they nurtured the land with immense passion. During school holidays and later through college and the early years of my career, I spent a great deal of time working on the plantation. I like to think I’m a reasonably capable coffee planter! After my parents passed on, my younger sister and her husband took over and have done a wonderful job sustaining it. For all of us, it remains an ancestral home. So yes, my bond with coffee runs deep. Which is why I’ve been particularly impressed by how Araku coffee has been shaped into a world-class offering by the Naandi team: Manoj Kumar, David Hogg and Anupama Sreeramaneni, with a disciplined, long-term approach. (Their approach to developing as shown in the chart below is disciplined and consistent.) My loyalty to Kodagu coffee remains, but I am now focussed on Chairing the Board of Araku Coffee & supporting its global journey!
