The Queen cut a cake and gave an off-the-cuff speech, highlighting precious memories of her father reading to her and the passion for literature he gave her. The charity @Booktrust will be giving Peter Rabbit books to 600,000 families to encourage reading from parent to child.

Queen Camilla appeared delighted to welcome Peter Rabbit to her London home.  The character was at Clarence House to mark the 100th anniversary of the UK’s largest children’s reading charity, BookTrust, of which Her Majesty is patron.

At 3.45pm I visited Clarence House to celebrate one hundred years of The Booktrust with it's Patron The Queen. Along with The Queen I met a lot of good hearted strong minded people, all connected to The Booktrust, all creatives, many writers: Julia Donaldson, Richard Osman Cressida Cowell, Frank Cotterell Boyce and Floella Benjamin. President Michael Morpurgo delivered a wonderful speech. On leaving we were all given a slice of celebration cake which was cut by the queen and wrapped in a small white box with a royal seal. Liverpool Street Station was packed I had to run to catch the 5.43 overground to Chingford. The only space was an air pocket between a woman facing outwards and the doors closing behind me. We adjusted to the slight awkwardness of forced intimacy as the train pulled away. "Lemn Sissay as I live and breath" she said, or words to that effect. Our noses were virtually touching. "I love the Christmas Dinners and the difference you make". I took solice from her because I heard this morning that one of the dinners isn't happening and I had been struggling to keep the news from affecting my mood. "I am going to call my son. He's a fan" she said. She strugggled for the phone "I am with Lemn Sissay. Lemn Sissay! Lemn SISSAY!" she pushed the phone to me. It was difficult to hold a phone to my ear cause the train was so packed. "Hello? Hello? Hello!? It's not working he's not there" I said "He is" She said. Three times she called him and three times the phone went off. "I am getting off at Hackney Downs" I said. "So am I" she said "Can I offer you this cake from the queen?" I said A discussion ensued about why I had some cake from The Queen on the 5.43 to Chingford. "He's meeting me at Hackney Downs. You can give him the slice of cake". "Who?" I said "My son." she said And then she tells me all about him. Ethan is a young poet doing A levels at Mossbourne Academy and he wants to do English Lit as his degree. We alight the train exit at Hackney Downs. And there he was. It is moments like this that make life worth living so I gave Ethan the celebration cake cut by the queen from The Book Trusts 100th Anniversary party. Jaqueline and Ethan of Hackney Downs. You made my day!
