@rpondiscio @Real_Edu_Leader @SuccessCharters I have yet to meet a principal that could even remotely serve as an instructional leader. They left the classroom for a reason and wasn’t leadership.
English

@Real_Edu_Leader The only place I've seen principals really and truly act as instructional leaders is @SuccessCharters. I'm sure it happens elsewhere, but it's a custom more honored in the breach than the observance.

@jjpeters @Beanie0597 Homeschooling families want their tax dollars to fund their efforts, which makes sense. What the voucher people think is that because they can pay a tuition that schools will accept them. It’s not the case.
English

@Beanie0597 They are a scam because legalized segregation and the destruction of the middle class in this country have gutted public schools leading to this moment. Also, do ALL schools have to accept ALL students via vouchers? Vouchers are usually just a tax break for wealthy families.

@educator4ever36 I have an exceptional aide this year who has gone above and beyond to learn my curriculum prior its instruction. I can’t say the same about the special ed superintendent or the school psychologist that allowed for the accommodations that we are tasked to follow.
English

@mrs_b_green @JamesAFurey Amen! Also the accommodations which were already gratuitous have only gotten worse. Accommodations for calculator use and multiplication charts has increased. Students can’t build number sense or access higher levels of math this way.
English

@JamesAFurey I teach JH/HS math. I sometimes unravel tricks students are taught. They are quick rote memorization, but don’t explain the whys and hows. Students can tell me the alligator eats the bigger number, but don’t know what symbol is greater than or less than.

It is a myth that Elementary schools don't spend enough instruction time on reading, writing, and math.
They spend HOURS every week on these subjects.
The problem is, they do not teach them well.
Bad practice does not get good results.
TheSchoolDoc@TheSchoolDoc
@JamesAFurey The problem isn't sequencing. The problem is more basic than that Elem schools do not spend enough instruction time on reading, writing and math - that's why you see kids below grade level. And then you have a K12 conveyor belt that pushes kids below grade level to the next🧵
English

@JamesAFurey No no no. I’m a teacher that embodies cognitive load theory melded with direct instruction. It’s completely the opposite of what my district spends an incredible amount of money supporting. The union is all I have to support me.
English

@JamesAFurey This will be the year in NYS that grades 5-8 will assess student reading and mathematical abilities exclusively on a tablet. Curious to see the results though I have a prediction….

Dear Schools,
Take the Chromebook or other 1:1 device students are required to have and use every day, and throw it in the trash.

Did you know that children have weaker reading comprehension when reading on screens vs paper? “Recent studies have begun to document salient differences in brain activity when reading on paper versus screens,” explaining weaker comprehension for digital reading. @calm_dust @JamesAFurey Avoid? Please enlighten me. What is here that provides a procedural foundation and allows kids access to conceptual understanding? My Asian born students are months if not years ahead of my us born students who are already well above average.
English

@33_MLJ @JamesAFurey Again, "we" can't teach math. Your school uses Singapore based pedagogy and content in order to avoid US based pedagogy and content. A look at what's actually available here, and you'll see why you need to import it.
US districts/teachers they've hired can't do better at scale.
English

@calm_dust @JamesAFurey I hear what you’re saying. I think we’re on the same page here. I do work and live in a left askew but I also think it’s a beacon of what works. Our teachers are allowed to do what works. It’s a difference in performance.
English

@33_MLJ @JamesAFurey Supports my claim.
Your school doesnt use any
currently available books in hs. That's fine for one school, for a little while, when the Ts are all 2sigma > mu, but it doesn't work in most states or anywhere curr is mandated at district level.
MiF 6-8 isn't standalone anymore.
English

@calm_dust @JamesAFurey In our middle school we use math in focus which is a Singapore math approach directed by Marshall Cavendish. Our high school uses texts specific to their curriculum.
English

@calm_dust @JamesAFurey This isn’t my experience where I teach nor is it where my kid goes to school. Both schools are explicit in their instruction. It’s “I do, we do, you practice a ton!” Group work only occurs well after foundational understanding occurs. Both schools are nationally acclaimed.
English

@JamesAFurey "we" don't know how to teach math. Barely any elementary teacher even knows arithmetic, and there are **no major textbooks** in 6-12 that aren't discovery learning or dumbed down garbage.
English

@JamesAFurey What’s your take on hinge questions? This is something being pushed right now. My perspective is that due to the disparity in my classes I find it better for me to offer individual feedback during an independent practice period. I learn more about them than if in a group.
