#DrSTONE Behind Story – 001
The Beginning of Dr. STONE
In October 2016, I met an editor from Jump+.
He suggested that I create a somewhat hard-boiled, high-intensity gangster action manga like Sun-Ken Rock.
He told me, “Unlike Weekly Shonen Jump, Jump+ is more niche, so you can express things more freely.”
Looking back, it really shows how different Jump+ was at the time compared to now.
I proposed something different. I suggested that we aim for Weekly Shonen Jump together.
I said:
“Someday—maybe in about five years—Jump+ will become as powerful as Weekly Shonen Jump. The future belongs to digital platforms.
But experience with print magazines will become even more valuable in the future. It’s like an artist learning classical traditions.
Why not challenge Jump+ in five years, and for now, let's try Weekly Shonen Jump together?”
Looking back now, I think some parts of what I said were right, and some were wrong.
The editor agreed and said he would ask Inagaki-sensei.
Inagaki-sensei responded, “If art is Boichi, I’m in,” and together with his editor (who would later become the first editor of Dr. STONE), they began developing the project.
By the end of November—just a month later(!)—the concept was completed, and I was asked to design the characters and create image illustrations.
In just two and a half hours, I designed Taiju, Yuzuriha, and Senku!
In early December, I submitted character illustrations with inking, several Boichi-style storyboard, and three episodes’ worth of storyboards from Inagaki-sensei.
On December 18, the project passed the editorial meeting—and that’s how Dr. STONE began.
In other words, from some day in October to the end of November—just about a month and a half(!)—Inagaki-sensei and the first editor of Dr. STONE completed everything from the initial concept to the first storyboards.
And from “Let’s try Jump” to “Series approved,” it took just a little over two months!
Both the original creator and the first editor were truly exceptional talents.

The very first concept image of the STONE WORLD.
As you can see the earlier concept illustration I drew, you’ll notice the remains of buildings in the background.
When Inagaki-sensei saw it, he said, “If human civilization came to a halt, would anything still remain after 3,700 years?”
At first, I thought of Dr. STONE as more of a fantasy.
I believed that dramatic scenery was more important visually, and I also thought that after 3,700 years, many remnants of human civilization would still exist.
However, I decided to follow the vision of the creator, Inagaki-sensei leading the project.
Looking at how the story eventually unfolds, his vision of Dr. STONE was clear:
A story of civilization reborn from zero in a beautiful, primeval world without humans—
and of Senku rebuilding it from nothing but stone and wood.
