Dr. David Norton, UF VP Research chats with NIH Director, Dr. Jay Bhattacharya, about the future of NIH. Apparently a new grants review model will focus more on innovation. Also, chronic conditions will remain a research priority for the next 5yr.

BREAKTHROUGH: First ever total artificial lung keeps patient alive without lungs until transplant. In a medical first, surgeons at Northwestern Medicine kept a patient alive without lungs using a total artificial lung (TAL) system. The 33 year old man arrived in critical condition with lungs so damaged by influenza associated pneumonia that antibiotics and conventional support couldn’t save them. His lungs were surgically removed (a bilateral pneumonectomy) and the artificial lung took over both gas exchange and circulatory support, something standard machines like ECMO can’t fully do on their own. For 48 hours, the TAL system oxygenated his blood, removed carbon dioxide, and maintained stable circulation while his body stabilized enough to receive a double lung transplant. Advanced laboratory analysis of the removed lungs revealed irreversible damage that made recovery impossible without total replacement. Two years later, the patient is thriving with excellent lung function, marking a huge leap for life saving support technology. This breakthrough shows we’re edging closer to machines that can temporarily replace entire organs, not just support failing ones. As artificial organ systems evolve, the gap between fatal disease and survival narrows, a reminder that medicine’s future may look more mechanical than we ever expected.
