@RoobNBCS He’s gonna bring back Marcus Smith and Nate Gerry next year and make a run at filling in the two empty years.

The puffery, distortion, and exaggerated promises inflated the value of his other companies and helped make him very wealthy. Here, I guess we’ll see.

Twitter, the free speech platform, will now not let you talk about other social networks. (To be clear, this is absolutely Twitter’s right to do so, but the whole “absolute free speech unless against the law” stuff was the normal blowhard talk from the CEO)

An exception — a server can block a server. So, a server filled with a bunch of Nazi’s spewing hate speech might get blocked by other servers. But want to see that stuff 😬? Move to a different server that doesn’t block it, and your followers etc move with you automatically

And it doesn’t matter what server you’re on. You can follow anyone on any server, and in your app it all appears as just one feed, with the mechanics invisible to you. And in most apps, you can search by user name, without even knowing the person’s server

Hot take 2: “Mastodon is hard” is way overblown. Sign up at a server like MstdnDOTsocial (Twitter blocks the actual link, but use . instead of DOT). Then download an app like Mastoot or even the official app and put in your credentials. Boom. Done. It feels very much like Twitter

Hot take - Twitter is the place if just follow journalists (although a bunch of them just got booted by the free speech guy). Mastodon is better for engagement — I get WAY more discussion there. Many people seem to use Twitter as a news reader. Mastodon feels like a community

I’m not here on the fowl site much. I’m on Mastodon - for those of you over there, the link is in my profile here. I can’t post the link in this tweet, because the “free speech absolutist” started blocking those links this week (this image is what you get when you try 🤣 ).

@danielpunkass @blankbaby Hey, Daniel. I love Mars Edit, and especially the new update. I hopped into your feed to look for info on setting a default category for Microposts. That would be a great addition!

@A_MrBenMitchell @viticci I had to ask for clarification on this, because this is seamless in any client app and I didn’t understand why the shortcut was needed. The shortcut is for when you find a Mastodon link elsewhere, such as on the web, and want to redirect it to reply.

@viticci The fact that you need a shortcut to do basic functionality says a lot about the platform

Are you playing around with Mastodon but are confused by how to view accounts and posts from another instance on *your* instance? I made Masto-Redirect, a shortcut that takes care of redirecting these links for you. Set it up once, use it everywhere. macstories.net/ios/masto-redi…

@johnvoorhees I just asked Federico this same question, but I’m feeling really dumb as I try to understand this shortcut. In an app like Mastoot, I can see and follow and reply to people on many different instances. Is this shortcut doing something different? I’m sure I’m missing the obvious.

@Alshie @marcoarment The developer of Tweetbot is over on Mastodon teasing/hinting about the development of either a new app for Mastodon, or maybe it is just Mastodon running in Tweetbot. The app I use is Mastoot because it has reliable timeline sync between devices

@marcoarment Hi Marco, is there a ‘Tweetbot’ for Mastodon, what are you using to interact with it?

I'm watching a YouTube video on how to improve your skiing on ice, and this guy's ice is what we in the Mid-Atlantic call a powder day #ski #skiing #snow

On Mastodon, I now follow 25% the accounts I follow here. Found movetodon.org an interactive tool to follow folks you followed here, much nicer and simpler to use.

@Plinz @timsalvatore Opposite perception here. Most of the tech people I know have already bailed and moved to Mastodon, with the journalists being the ones staying here.

The difference in Twitter drama perception between media and tech people I talk to is stunning. Media: “illegal”, “death spiral”, “bankruptcy”, “incompetent”. Tech: “he bought it, he can do what he wants”, “he is cleaning ship”, “twitter will be great”, “Elon is figuring it out”.
