The Constraints Collective

A paper that has influenced sport practice designs across the world. Our 2nd paper with 818 citations is a fine collaboration with @rossapinder and @Duarterbparaujo If you want a copy send us a DM and don’t forget to ask any questions in the chat.

Five things you Don't need to teach beginner coaches: Periodization; Energy Systems; What VO2 Max is; Biomechanical laws and formulae; The Yerke's Dodson inverted U Hypothesis. Five things you DO need to teach beginner #coaches: How to create safe, enjoyable learning experiences; How to connect, engage and inspire the hearts and minds of kids; How to create positive, constructive learning environments; How to make it fun; How to create experiences which help kids fall in love with "doing". My question to you as a #coach developer is - are you providing the right learning experiences for beginning level coaches or are you still stuck in the 1980s and making them sit through hours and hours of largely irrelevant sports science principles that do not have anything to do with #coaching young kids?

Any sports coach should handle these 3 concepts for their essential task.

I got asked the other day "Is there a #swimming coach you'd send your own kids to for #coaching - and why?" I responded immediately, "The three names that come to mind are Ian Pope Australia, David Marsh USA and Eddie Reese USA". Why? 1. The kids would be better people for the experience - kinder, selfless, more generous, understand the importance "team", understand the benefits of setting goals and working hard to achieve them, more independent and 100 other things. 2. They'd be given the opportunity to learn to love the experience of the sport - in and out of the water - regardless of their talent. 3. They'd be cared for, nutured, respected and given the environment to be all they choose to be without limits or barriers. We all get carried away about the importance of heart rate - it's HEART that matters. We are so overly concerned with counting laps - that we forget it's more important to make every lap count. We are too focused on getting kids to do what's written on the whiteboard, rather than coaching them to see what's "not" written - what's on the spaces between the lines.

Promoting an external focus of attention is always the best when coaching. Or so I thought... Here's why that might not always be the case 🧵👇🧵

Coaches don't always need to ask players questions verbally. One of the most powerful ways to check for understanding is by letting our practice tasks ask 'questions' We can deliberately manipulate the task to ask questions & check for understanding through careful observation.

Is the constraints led approach challenging for people who struggle with being creative?

❌The Constraints-Led Approach isn't just an athlete centred approach 🤸‍♀️🌍Instead, the CLA should be described as an athlete-environment centred approach 👉It is important for coaches to take into account the learners and the context of the environment they are in
