(8/9) The counters don't break Mir's argument. They are the argument, seen from close up. Zoom out far enough and an exponential curve flattens into a line. Each counter – the materials, the labor, the institutions – is a bump in that line. The pressmen. The flash crash. The F-16 pilot riding a plane he doesn't understand, going where the computer decided. Up close they look like refutations. From far enough out they are just the slope.

Andrey Mir published this essay in February. I have been chewing on it ever since. Every time I work my way to an exit, I end up back where he started. I don't know what you call that except: that's when you know an idea has got to you 🧵 (1/9)

Acceleration of time means that the number of events per period grows exponentially. More and more happens in less and less time. It also means that nearly all required knowledge will be produced in the last seconds before the Singularity. 3/3 andreymir.com/p/the-accelera…

"Just as the alphabet emancipated writing from the pictorial semblance of physical reality, artificial intelligence emancipates intelligence from the constraints of its biological carrier—humans."

As in an old joke, we thought it was orgasm, but it was asthma. We thought the development of technologies advanced humankind, but it was the technological imperative funneling human efforts and resources into artificial intelligence. Full story: default.blog/p/we-thought-t…

You don't know what you want until you've tried to say it badly several times. Silicon Valley's entire roadmap assumes the opposite. That assumption will hollow out knowledge work from the inside. Here's the argument. 🧵 (1/19)

Read Kyle Kingsbury’s 32 page critique of AI: “The Future of Everything is Lies.” It is a polemic, cynical and disagreeable piece to many in tech, but felt by most outside of it. It highlights the many problems we will need to solve as AI percolates through society. Must read.
