I swear, it's like there's an epidemic of people who heard "write what you know" and interpreted it in the most shallow and asinine way imaginable.
You should write what you know, but you also know dragons. You should make an effort to do research. You should find inspiration from outside your own narrow slice of existence.

maybe this is idiosyncratic, but learning about Éric Rohmer's personal life—the fact that he was a devout Catholic, that he hid his filmmaking career from his mother, that he never cheated on his wife—really turned me off his films
