There's a pervasive assumption in many #AutismParent, #EarlyIntervention, & #SpecialEducation circles that Autistic people who are non-speaking due to apraxia of speech, are incapable of comprehending, learning, & engaging with language in a meaningful, 'functional' way.

@sueyoungmedia I'm pondering this on a deeper level. My son is 12, nonverbal, & on the #autism spectrum. When talking w/ others about their fear of public speaking, I should use my journey as the mom of a nonverbal child to inspire them to use their voice because some don't get a choice.

I didn’t speak until I was 4. Even after that, I was quiet and perhaps intimidated to speak. I thought my voice and my story had no purpose. But it turned out- MY voice & MY story were my secret weapons. And it could be yours, too. It’s time to let the cat out of the bag!
