I found the key in my jacket pocket the morning after she left. Not my key. Brass, old, with a tiny mermaid carved into it. She must’ve slipped it in when she hugged me goodbye. I didn’t chase her. Down her old street, past the coffee shop where we first talked for 6 hours, to the beach we said we’d move to “someday.”There, buried under the boardwalk plank we used to sit on, was a small wooden box. Same mermaid. Inside: a folded note and two train tickets. Dated for tomorrow. The note said 3 words: “Come find me.”I’m at the station now. Key in one hand, ticket in the other. I don’t know if she’ll be on that train. But for the first time in months, I’m not waiting for her to come back. I’m going after the door she left open.
