After over 5 years of languishing behind bars for simply protesting against police brutality during the #EndSARS protest, we have finally secured the release of this young man who was only 17 years old when he was arrested in October 2020. In 2021, when his case was brought before the Lagos State High Court, he was charged with all sorts of criminal charges including unlawful possession of firearms with intent to commit robbery and unlawful wearing of armed forces uniform, yet not one shred of evidence was ever presented to substantiate the claims. Our legal team in Lagos only became involved in 2024, following the passing of his former lawyer, Mr. Ogunlana, Esq., when the case was referred to us by @TIBMovement. Since then, the case has suffered multiple adjournments as the prosecution failed to present a witness. Today, we applied for the case to be struck out due to a lack of diligent prosecution, and the court granted our prayer. Seeing our client walk out of the courtroom a free man today and reunite with his family after over five years of unjust detention gave us great joy. For him, and for countless others enduring Nigeria’s unjust justice system, we will continue to fight tirelessly. May justice always prevail. Cc: @_yemia #PrisonDecongestion #Nigeria #ProBono

There are 5 wall clocks at the arrival terminal of M.M. International Aiport Lagos that should be showing the time in Lagos, Beijing, UAE, New York, and London. None of them is working. If you check, it is just a battery problem. None of the airport officials sees anything wrong with that. It is a cultural thing, a poor culture of excellence.

Dear Governor of Ogun State @DapoAbiodunCON It's time to put multiple speed bumps close to the Toll Gate bus stop along the Lagos-Abeokuta road. Another accident happened between two trailers yesterday & crushed people. Let there be speed bumps 1km, 500m before on both sides

Hard!

I watched a guy on the bus today. 6:45 AM in the morning while jogging, His eyes looked heavy, like he was carrying the weight of an entire lineage on his shoulders. But immediately he sat down, he brought out his phone and started scrolling TikTok. As a Biomedical Engineer, I wanted to snatch that phone from his hand. See, let me tell you the bitter truth nobody wants to hear. Most of you are not lazy or "unlucky." You are chemically sabotaging your own destiny before you even brush your teeth. The first 60 minutes of your day is a war zone. Your brain is begging for direction. It runs on dopamine, that’s the fuel for your motivation. But what do you do? You wake up. Your eyes haven't even adjusted to the darkness of your room, and gbam, you pick up your phone. You check WhatsApp to see who ignored you. You check X to see who is fighting. You check Instagram to see your mates buying cars you can't afford yet. You think you are just "waking up," but scientifically? You are flooding your brain with cheap, unearned dopamine. You are frying your reward system. By 8 AM, your brain is already tired. It has consumed "content" but produced nothing. And let me speak to the men for a second. I write about men a lot because I see what you go through. The pressure is much. You wake up and the first thought is Rent, School fees, the woman you want to impress. It is terrifying. So, you grab your phone to escape. The phone is your pacifier. It numbs the panic of the morning. But that comfort is a lie. When you start your day with cheap dopamine, actual work feels like torture. You have programmed your neurochemistry to be a consumer, not a king. You are training your brain to be weak in a world that eats weak men for breakfast. Here is the hard truth (and you can drag me if you like): Your morning mood doesn’t determine how your day goes. It determines your capacity to suffer for your success. If you can’t survive the first hour of the day without a screen, how do you want to survive the economy? Protect your first hour. Don't touch that phone. Stare at the ceiling. Pray. Do pushups. Go for a morning jug or walk. Let your brain starve for a bit so it learns to hunt for the hard things. Stop feeding your destiny to the algorithm.

There are too many startups in Nigeria solving nonsense problems. This is a country with massive insecurity. People are hungry. Transportation is a daily struggle. Over 20 million children are out of school. Healthcare is broken. Power is unreliable. Jobs are scarce. Why are there so few startups solving fundamental Nigerian problems? And why are so many chasing problems that barely exist here? Technology is not about writing code. Technology is not about buzzwords. Technology is not about sounding smart on pitch decks. Technology is simply a better way of solving real problems. If your solution cannot meaningfully touch: •security •education •transportation •healthcare •food systems •jobs •cost of living then maybe it’s not innovation, maybe it’s just noise. Nigeria does not need more cool startups. Nigeria needs useful ones. Let’s go back to basics.

People are very busy. When people give you their time, don't take it for granted. It's not easy for people to sacrifice their time for you. Every second gone is gone forever.

The problem is, nobody really has the balls to think differently. Yes, we all romanticize the idea of being different. Until it's time to ACTUALLY think & do different. That's when our primordial instincts of social acceptance kicks in. It's as strong as the instinct to survive

At the risk of being misunderstood, no matter how many slums the government renovates in Nigeria, most of them will eventually return to the same state. So it’s pointless. People’s environment is a big reflection of their mindset, that’s why when you grow mentally, you begin to feel really uncomfortable about even your physical environment and appearance, you want to do anything within your ability to keep at least your own personal spaces neat, even though a neat slum. And this is not a matter of rich or poor, you can be poor financially but rich in mindset, the riches in the mindset will automatically reflect in the slum environment. Have you ever worn a cloth neatly for years and the moment you give it out to someone, it only a matter of few weeks before that beautiful cloth begin to turn brown and fade away. This one still happened to me last Christmas. The first step to transformation is not changing from outside, it’s really changing from inside out! Maintenance culture is more about the quality of the users mind and not so much about budgets. Build the roads, but importantly build the people.

Lagos is a place that throws questions at you from the moment you wake up. Traffic, floods, power, safety, jobs, everything needs attention, sometimes all at the same time. Since I resumed office in 2019, every day has been about keeping this city on its feet while over 20 million people chase their dreams. When people see photos of new roads or rail lines, they often miss the human side of the work. I think about the market woman who needs to get home before dark. The student stuck in traffic when it rains. The young man trying to turn his talent into a living. Those faces stay with me. And Lagos is more than concrete and transport. It is the creative soul of Africa. Our music travels the world. Our fashion, film, food, nightlife. Culture is not a side project for us, it is part of how the economy grows. What many now call Detty December did not happen by accident. It came from a decision to take tourism and entertainment seriously, all year round. In my recent conversation with Konye Chelsea Nwabogor, I spoke honestly about what it feels like to lead a city this intense, why we designed the THEMES+ agenda the way we did, and how small encounters with everyday Lagosians often shape big decisions. It is not a perfect journey. But it is a sincere one. You can read the full interview in today’s THISDAY Style.
