My boss's boss is like 42, never married, no kids. Earns $275-300K per year. Goes on a minimum of two international vacations a year w/ his girlfriend. 10+ days, all out. Eats the best food, stays in top notch accomodations. Excursions, tours, nicest beaches, etc. Great guy, I'm happy for him. But what I've realized is that without kids, you end up chasing a lifestyle that has to continually be topped in order for you to be satisfied and find happiness. What he and others like him don't understand is that when you have children, seeing THEM experience life's most basic things and watching their eyes light up at all the "firsts", brings greater pleasure and joy than any vacation or travel experience ever could. Seeing THEM try blueberries for the first time is greater than dining at the best 5 star restaurant in Europe. Seeing THEM learn how to walk is greater than walking the Great Wall of China or strolling along the most picturesque beach. Watching THEM giggle uncontrollably at "peek-a-boo" tops any A-list comedian act. Seeing THEIR excitement when building a fort out of cardboard boxes and making a door big enough for daddy is superior to staying at 5-star resorts. Flying kites with THEM far outweighs excursions like parasailing or helicopter rides. Seeing THEM perform a recital on stage for the first time is more rewarding than watching a Broadway show or top notch symphony orchestra. ----------------- When you have children, all of a sudden you realize that life's greatest joys are not in the pursuit of things or pleasure or travel, but rather in the LOVE and bond you share with your very own image bearers. Seeing the beauty and magnificence and wonder of life all over again for the first time through THEIR eyes and expressions gives you something the world simply cannot offer, nor even come close.

Mental toughness comes from solving problems — not from having every problem solved for you. If your daughter forgets her homework, don’t bring it to school. If she doesn’t bring a jacket on a cold day, she feels the cold. When she says “I’m bored,” don’t rush to fix it — just say, “I wonder what you’re going to do about it,” and then stay quiet. It’s tough love, but according to Dr. Amen, that’s how you build resilience instead of helplessness.

I started listening to Bad Bunny when I moved to Miami a few years ago. It was always playing in the gym. I started to learn the songs, which started teaching me words in Spanish. Then some of the Dominican trainers at the gym and I became friends, and they started speaking Spanish with me. It gave me a small taste of what it must be like for immigrants who don’t speak English to come to America and turn to movies, TV shows, and music to learn the language. And how quickly you can become friends with someone even when you only share a few words in common. IMO that’s what Bad Bunny’s halftime show captured creatively. Latin culture is special. And you don’t need to speak the language to be invited to the party, dance, and experience community & connection. I’m glad he didn’t sing a single word in English. It’s his party. And I appreciate him inviting all of us, fluent or not, to be part of it.

The practical implications: If you’re sleeping 6h and think you’re functioning fine, you’ve lost the internal calibration to know you’re not. The subjects in this study would have told you they felt “okay” while performing like they’d pulled an all-nighter. For anyone doing cognitively demanding work, this means you cannot trust how you feel. You need to track objective markers: error rates, decision latency, problem-solving throughput. Sleep need is biological, not negotiable. Most adults require 7-9 hours, and the research shows no population-level adaptation to chronic restriction. “I only need 6 hours” is almost always “I’ve forgotten what baseline cognition feels like.“

A Christmas morning reflection… 95% By the time your child turns 18, you've spent ~95% of the time you will ever spend with them in your lifetime. There are specific windows, much shorter than you care to admit, during which certain people and relationships will occupy your life. You may have only one more summer with all of your siblings. Two more trips with that old group of friends. A few more years with your grandpa. A handful of encounters with that coworker you love. One more long walk with your parents. If you fail to appreciate these windows, they will quickly disappear. Time Wealth is about an awareness of these windows. But more importantly, it’s about taking action against that awareness. It's about recognizing that you are in more control of your time than you realize. That you can take actions to create time with the people you love most. That you can bend these curves.
