On April 20, 1914 Colorado National Guardsmen opened fire on a coal mining tent colony. 13 women and children were found in the smoking rubble. These families had been kicked out of the company towns after striking for safety measures and poor wages. The massacre sparked anger and ten days of guerilla warfare between the militant workers and national guards. The Colorado Fuel and Iron company, owned by the Rockefeller oligarchy, even called on Woodrow Wilson to send troops to fight against the workers.
