#FirstSports: Indian Football "Embarrassed": Did AIFF Ruin India's FIFA World Cup Dream? India’s FIFA Women’s World Cup hopes were dashed after a disappointing AFC Asian Cup 2026. This has exposed administrative chaos in the AIFF. @joshbarnesnews

Imagine your team is playing the biggest tournament in its recent history, which also acts as FIFA Women’s World Cup and Olympic qualifiers, and two days before the match the players are forced to write a letter like this. Most likely, the blame will go to the vendor, but what about the AIFF leadership and employees responsible for this situation? For not organising the IWL on time, for arranging just three international friendlies, and for mishandling exposure tours in the build-up to the AFC Women’s Asian Cup. This is administrative failure, not just a vendor issue. #IndianFootball @KhelNow

AN INDEPENDENT INQUIRY NEEDED IN AIFF The All India Football Federation (AIFF) has ordered an inquiry in the kit debacle that rocked Indian football during India’s campaign in the Women’s Asian Cup. While talking about the “stop payment” measure taken against the vendor, the AIFF Deputy Secretary General M Satyanarayan quipped, “The (Integrity) officer will also look into the letter. All aspects are being checked.” There is a sneaky feeling that Mr. Satyanarayan is trying to shift the blame and shove bigger fiascos under the rug. It’s easy to punish the team members and support staff, who have no godfathers but did their best on the pitch. Can the honourable DSG order an independent inquiry into the following? a) Why did India play against Russia, Uzbekistan, etc. before they qualified and mostly against club teams once they qualified? b) Why was the exposure tour programme was virtually snatched away from the AIFF National Teams department and outsourced? Which agency/agencies were engaged? What was the financial deal? Was a tender floated before hiring? c) Why was the November FIFA International Window wasted? Who arranged matches against two mediocre sides from the substandard UAE league? How much money was spent? d) The government took care of the financial needs, but why such a long tour of Turkey where not even one full international could be played? How much did the tour cost the AIFF coffers? e) Why didn’t the DSG act when the disturbing news came in from Turkey that not all practice matches were exactly competitive? Why did he keep quiet when one of the matches had to be abandoned after 30 minutes because the rival side fielded a bunch of kids? f) Why didn’t he bother when India’s three-week stay in Australia produced only two practice matches against teams that fielded unfit players? g) Didn’t he realise that long tours of Turkey and Australia were good to utilise the valuable fund the government was providing for preparations but not enough for the exposure the girls needed? h) Why didn’t he object when a new coach was brought in 40 days prior to the championship? Why didn’t he consult the Executive Committee? Did he notice an unusual hurry behind the move? @YASMinistry and @Media_SAI should launch an inquiry. After all, they contributed a considerable fund for the Indian Women's National Team’s Asian Cup dream. #IndianFootball

This is the reality. As India faced Japan yesterday, I was watching my own team face another on the ground and I was wondering how we were going to survive the next financial year. Last 3 months have been like that. 200 unanswered mails because CSR starts and ends on LinkedIn.

We’ll keep doing permutations and combinations all our lives. Football is dead, but math lives on. We are after all from the land of Aryabhatta !

#IndianFootball fans are disappointed right now after thrashing against Japan, but victory against Chinese Taipei by a two-goal margin in the final Group Stage match on March 10 will see India finish second in the group and progress to the quarter-finals. Feels like an impossible task, but keep supporting our girls.

When India plays a team like Japan, people rush to point out the technical gap. What they rarely mention is the structural gap which lacks years of funding, academies, professional leagues, grassroots systems. Talent has never been the issue.
