@montie @GoodwinMJ @reformparty_uk Hi Tim. I am deeply impressed by so much that you do and say. It is clear there is quite strong personal animus between yourself and Matt. Might I suggest a drink down the pub together. He needs to wind his neck in a little, and you need to understand what lies behind his style.

The whole controversy over @GoodwinMJ's book reminds me of the early warning sign that Rachel Reeves' dodgy footnotes provided about her. @reformparty_uk should now fully investigate Mr Goodwin's book and if there are repeated examples of factual error he should be removed from the candidates list. We need our future MPs to be trustworthy and credible.

Very good piece and chimes with many of us who have been ministers.
A little story. One Friday night as we were emerging from the pandemic I got a call from my private secretary. I was a junior transport minister. He said that the driving test site which had just re-opened had crashed.
If you remember, driving tests couldn't happen during Covid, meaning that people couldn't drive at all - including those who had to get re-tested (older people, HGV drivers etc). There was a huge backlog of people desparate to get tests.
Well obviously once it opened, so many people logged on it couldn't cope. The transport secretary had been dealing with it all day but by 10pm he had enough and as the most junior minister I was asked to take over. MPs were shouting at us because their constituents couldn't get tests, couldn't take up jobs, were losing income, etc.
I said to my private secretary, get me the Chief Exec of the Driving Test agency on the phone to brief me and tell me what he's doing to fix the problem.
"Minister, I can't do that"
"Why not?"
"Its 10pm on a Friday night".
Silence.
More silence.
"Can you ask him to get on a call with me?"
"Minister, we have asked, and he's not minded to"
Gentle expostulation on my part. "But I'm working at 10pm on a Friday night. I am certainly not minded to, but it is his agency that is causing us the problem?"
"I know minister. But I still can't get him on the call".
Cut to the end, I pushed through. He came on the call an hour later. I got him to brief me with regular updates starting at 7am Saturday. We got the thing open and working by lunch time.
But really!
Without being rude to many of my former colleagues, I know many of them wouldn't have bothered. But more to the point, as a minister, why should you have to!
If people were doing their jobs as they should, they should take ownership of precisely these problems.
Small story, but repeated time and again. Side note - its not just the core civil service that are the problem but the myriad of ALBs (arms length bodies) and NGAs (non governmental agencies) that are even harder. Civil servants themselves have no control over what those guys are doing let alone ministers.

🚨STARMER TORN APART IN COMMITTEE: BRITAIN LEFT WEAK & EXPOSED! 🔥
Keir Starmer Has Temper Tantrum When Challenged On Military Failure, Told You're No Churchill 💥
In a brutal Liaison Committee session today (23 March 2026), PM Keir Starmer was completely taken apart over Britain's dire military underfunding and lack of war footing amid escalating Middle East tensions, including the recent Iranian drone strike on a UK base in Cyprus.
Tory MP Sir Bernard Jenkin delivered the killer line: “It sounds as though you are at peace, while we are actually at war.”
When Starmer fell back on his usual political talking point, blaming the “mess” left by 14 years of Tory underinvestment, Jenkin fired back with a devastating zinger:
“I dare say Winston Churchill had a bit of mess to clear up from the previous government. Margaret Thatcher had a bit of mess to clear up from the previous government.”
Starmer visibly lost his cool, snapping defensively and dodging the core issue of why the UK isn't on a true war-fighting footing despite the threats.

@Hepworthclare Extraordinary! He was snappish and defensive when his weakness was exposed and highlighted. He remains to utterly convinced of his moral superiority that he comes across as a a sensitive prig.

This letter to the @Telegraph editor encapsulates the experience of many, many people in the system.
Prior experience is almost never utilised in government - you could be a qualified doctor applying to the civil service fast stream and ask to be put in Department for Health to utilise your skill set to the NHS and the country’s benefit.
You will invariably have your wishes ignored and be plonked in e.g. HMRC and spend the next decade languishing there and trying to get transferred to somewhere more relevant. It’s a criminal waste of talent

British Gas, Renewables UK, Octopus Energy, the GMB trade union, and even Tony Blair agree we need to be drilling in the North Sea.
The Jackdaw field alone has enough gas to heat 1.6 million homes.
Ed Miliband’s obsessive net zero zealotry makes us poorer and more vulnerable.

The head of British Gas has called on the Government to drop its ban on exploiting untapped oil and gas fields in the North Sea, saying the move would help ease spiralling energy costs ⤵️ telegraph.co.uk/business/2026/…

There is "no assessment" that the UK is being targeted by Iranian missiles, the PM has said
