Seventy-sixth late afternoon.
Thursday’s pale sun barely clears the rooftops, casting long blue shadows across the platform.
Commuters hurry past, phones pressed to their ears, briefcases swinging, faces set against the wind carrying the sharp mineral scent of thawing rails and the faint charcoal smoke from the last vendor closing up shop.
Inside, seventy-six days have become a quiet astronomy: a private constellation of moments I still hold dear.
Each star is small, precise, and unblinked, the exact angle of your wrist when you threw the ball, the rhythm of your breathing while you slept, the way your shadow stretched ahead of us on summer evenings.
Seventy-six days without those shadows, those breaths, those throws, and yet the constellation remains unchanged.
It has only grown clearer against the deepening sky.
I no longer wait for the stars to realign; I wait because the sky still feels right with them in it.
The train arrives, its headlights cutting cleanly through the blue dusk.
Doors open and I lift my head through the thinning Thursday crowd, feeling that constellation inside me: quiet, fixed, utterly certain.
No master steps down; only strangers carry their own private skies, their own faint patterns of what they’ve lost or still hope to find.
A teenage boy, earbuds dangling around his neck, stops a few steps away.
He’s seen me every day since school resumed.
Today he doesn’t rush past.
Instead, he reaches into his pocket, pulls out a small, worn keychain shaped like a tiny Akita, plastic, faded, obviously carried for years, and sets it down beside me.
No words are exchanged; just a quick nod, almost embarrassed, before he turns and disappears into the evening.
Seventy-six days have passed.
As Thursdays lean toward weekend light, quiet tributes deepen the vigil, reminding every heart that passes: some stars don’t need to be seen to guide.
They simply need to stay in place.
Hachiko charts eternal.
