We grew up shouting ‘Up NEPA’… now we’re just trying to survive without them.” “This is not just about light… it’s about how Nigerians keep showing up in the dark.” I Remember how excited we used to get. I’m talking about when MultiChoice first came to Nigeria with DSTV. Funny enough, it was around the same time my twin sister and I fell sick, same illness, same time. Crazy how twin telepathy works sometimes. My dad bought it to cheer us up. According to him, if we were happy, maybe the sickness would go too. But that’s not even where I’m going. There are more pressing issues. The real excitement was NEPA. That moment when power is restored and the whole street comes alive— kids shouting “Up NEPA!” like something miraculous just happened. In my house, it meant negotiations. Five children. One TV. We had to take turns, oldest to the youngest. (My twin and I still haven’t agreed on who is older, so… that was always a situation.) Different shows, same TV, limited time. You’d already planned it in your head. Maybe even set a reminder. Then, just a few minutes before your show starts, NEPA does what they know how to do best. They take the light. Just like that. The same voices that shouted in joy now groan in frustration. And somehow, it feels like NEPA hears it… and enjoys it. And the crazy part? It’s still happening. It’s now the new normal. In this country, constant electricity is not a necessity, it’s a luxury. A luxury. Something you’re lucky to have for a few hours… maybe once or twice a week. While some parts of the country haven’t seen light in years. So yes, I should be grateful, right? But how do you stay grateful when you’re melting? Nigeria is a tropical country. The heat is not forgiving. Just weeks ago, the temperature in my state felt like it was competing with boiling water.(97°) No light. Nothing to cool the house. Nothing to preserve food. Nothing to ease the discomfort. No power to pump water. And even when there is water, it’s been sitting under the sun, hot, almost untouchable. Everything comes down to light. And then there are students. How are they supposed to cope? No light to charge devices. No water to bathe before lectures. No power to read at night. Yet, they still show up. We all do. You show up to remote work like everything is fine. Because you’re paid for results, not excuses. But your “all” is slowly wearing thin. You’re juggling charging schedules, chasing power, managing deadlines, just trying not to fall behind. And still, you create. You write. You tell stories. You push through. Maybe it’s survival instinct. Maybe it’s resilience. Being Nigerian is not an easy feat. This country tests everything, your patience, your strength, your sanity. Opportunities are limited. The system is tiring. Even global opportunities sometimes look past you simply because of where you’re from. And yet, We show up. We adapt. We survive. We excel everywhere else… except where we’re supposed to live lol. Fuel is expensive. Resources are wasted. The weight of it all keeps piling up. And somehow, it’s always the people who carry it. While I know after this, we still go on to sulk up to it and can’t do anything about it, but yet I write this maybe just to get this frustration, helplessness, and hopelessness off my mind, the latter, I think, for I have become stoic. They call us the Giant of Africa… but we keep shrinking where it matters. We stoop so low while those in power keep scooping what belongs to all of us. You’re trying. You’re pushing. You’re surviving in a system that makes everything harder than it should be. Take a breath. Be proud of yourself. Because honestly, being here, and still showing up, is no small thing. It's so sad and too bad that “Being Nigerian means learning how to survive things that shouldn’t even be a problem.”
