An open letter from Civic Service Union 52 to Mayor Sohi and Members of Edmonton City Council, regarding the Edmonton Public Library’s decision around Pride flags in public areas within its branches: March 13, 2025 Reference No: 43-01EPLPrideFlag.Feb2025 Dear Mayor Sohi and Members of Edmonton City Council: On behalf of Civic Service Union 52, representing over 6,000 dedicated public service workers in Edmonton, we write to express our deep concern over the recent directive from the Edmonton Public Library (EPL) to remove Pride flags from public areas within its branches. This decision contradicts EPL’s stated commitment to fostering inclusive, welcoming spaces and sends a troubling message to both staff and the broader community. Symbols of allyship, such as Pride flags, play a critical role in demonstrating that EPL is a safe and welcoming space for all Edmontonians, including LGBTQ2S+ individuals who rely on the library as a vital community resource. By removing these symbols, EPL risks alienating staff and patrons alike and diminishing the trust that has made the library a progressive leader in accessibility and inclusion. We urge City Council to take a stand on this issue and consider whether EPL’s actions align with Edmonton’s broader commitment to equity, diversity, and inclusion. Given the City’s ongoing efforts to champion these values, we ask that you call on EPL’s leadership to reverse this decision and uphold the principles that make Edmonton a diverse and inclusive city. Now, more than ever, it is imperative that public institutions like EPL lead with integrity and reaffirm their commitment to fostering spaces where all people feel valued and supported. We trust that City Council will stand with CSU 52, EPL staff, and the broader community in ensuring that Edmonton remains a place of acceptance, respect, and belonging. When a city council goes "in-camera," it means the council is holding a meeting or a portion of a meeting in private, away from the public and media. This is typically done to discuss sensitive or confidential matters that cannot be addressed in an open session. While in-camera meetings can be an important tool in effective governance, we implore council and admin to use them sparingly to ensure that transparency for taxpayers is number one priority. #YEG
