Today marks 30 years since the Northridge earthquake, which measured 6.7 on the Richter scale. The Caltech campus only suffered minor damage. The 1994 Big T yearbook features the Seismology team, including Dr. Kate Hutton in S. Mudd and heavy media presence along Wilson Avenue.

#OTD: Throop College hosted the Sophomore Hop in Glendale’s Hotel Maryland, where students and faculty members enjoyed punch and danced the foxtrot, one-step, and waltz. This dance card, keeping track of the dances and names of partners, was recently donated to the Archives.

The Museum of Contemporary Art (@MOCAlosangeles) is launching MOCA Climate Conversations, debuting on September 30. The series continues throughout the fall, including the second symposium of the season, “Urban Ecologies,” which will bring together artists Jessa Calderon and Carolina Caycedo, among others, on December 3rd. Los Angeles-based Colombian artist Caycedo’s (@carolinacaycedo) artworks will be featured in “We Place Life at the Center,” an exhibition coming Fall 2024 for PST ART at the Vincent Price Art Museum (@vpam_arts), which directs dialogue and points of exchange among art, science, and environmental justice in the Americas. For this month’s #archiveshashtagparty, we share from the Royal W. Sorensen papers a photo from the High Volts Laboratory. Sorensen regularly gave public demonstrations on high volts electricity using the cascade transformer to produce artificial lightning. #ArchivesScience
