1/2 The yazh (Tamil: யாழ்,) is a harp used in ancient Tamil music. With a history dating back at least to the 2nd century BCE, characterized by its
🦢1) ebony neck,its tip was often carved to resemble the head of a mythical creature called a yali.
🦢2) boat-shaped, skin-covered resonator, and
🦢3) gut strings.
🦢4) Vina Connection: It is considered an ancestor of the modern-day Vina, with the Yali headpiece still seen on the Vina's headstock.
Once a prominent instrument in Tamil music, it gradually became extinct, though it is now undergoing a revival, with researchers and instrument makers like Uru Instruments working to recreate and popularize it.
