It's funny because the "every rifleman a marksman" idea has been tried out, with great success, in a modern urban environment by the Filipino military.
They did this by ditching the stupid battle rifle concept and just passing out long barreled AR15s.
Which fills the niche fine without fucking your logistics and having multiple calibers being passed around a platoon.
