📚 Best Nuggets From Coaching Books This one comes from Win Forever by Pete Carroll. Before I read it, I thought of “culture” as slogans and standards. But Carroll’s book showed me it’s something much deeper — a system. Carroll didn’t just talk about culture — he installed it. Every meeting, every drill, every phrase connected back to his philosophy: Always Compete. That changed how I approached culture myself. You wouldn’t run a defense without an install plan, and you can’t build culture without one either. Carroll’s culture was summarized in his “Win Forever” pyramid — a model for maximizing potential — starting from environment and belief system all the way up to performance goals. It’s not abstract motivation. It’s architecture. That idea reshaped how I thought about building culture. Even Steve Kerr has said Carroll’s framework helped him shape the Warriors’ culture. I’ve attached my own Culture Working Model below. Curious — how do you build and structure culture in your program?
