Further to his second anniversary as Commissioner for the Malta Tax and Customs Administration, Mr. Joseph Caruana hosted an exclusive interview about being at the helm of the tax levying body, uncollected taxes and the VAT gap:

On 30 January, MTCA held a seminar on Central Electronic System of Payment information (CESOP). Commissioner, Mr Joseph Caruana, highlighted the importance, for MTCA, to capitalise on digitalisation opportunities, like CESOP, that are critical in the fight against VAT fraud.

VAT rate of 12% came into force on 1 January 2024 on Custody & Management of Securities; Management of Credit/Credit Guarantees; Hiring of Pleasure Boats; Services relating to care of the human body. VAT Returns due by 22nd March 2024 feature this rate(period ending 31st January)

The national strategy for financial services in Malta is based on a more effective, efficient and resilient tax system. It is aimed at having an entity which inspires voluntary tax compliance, couple with a robust enforcement culture.

Customs officials intercepted €35,810 in undeclared cash during a random currency check at the MIA. An Israeli passenger travelling to Cyprus, was stopped by Customs, and was found to be carrying €35,810 in undeclared cash. The Police are investigating the case further.

Customs Malta seizes €75,042 in undeclared cash, 6kgs of Cannabis and 108 wine bottles during the month of February. Link in bio for the full story.

A Russian passenger was found to be carrying €36,014 in undeclared cash at the MIA departures lounge. The passenger, en-route to Moscow via Istanbul, was stopped by Customs officials during a routine currency check. Link in bio for the whole story.
