Hugely excited to be involved with this project - the first time in over a century that the complete final version will be heard, with fantastic music that will be unknown even to Puccini lovers!

Finally! We can reveal that our 55th season full-scale opera production is the revival of the final 1921 version of Puccini's La rondine. @CarloRizziMusic conducts @BBCSO with a cast led by @ErmonelaJaho @BarbicanCentre on 5 December. Studio recording to follow of course too 🎶

@j_amesmarriott Your brilliant column on Iris Murdoch deserves a mention! Both very funny and very insightful, and as a fellow Murdoch lover in my teens, it hit home - a peculiar author of the fantasy genre 😃 thetimes.com/culture/books/…

The story of Elsie Houston -- a Brazilian, classically trained soprano. Follow her artistic and social networks from Brazil to Paris and then on to New York to open the door to an unexpected history of race, sexuality, and society during the 20th century global.oup.com/academic/produ…

Took myself to see this, in an almost empty cinema, this afternoon. Worth seeing if you can catch it anywhere!

@si_rubinstein Yes but the Gates scholarship applications aren’t assessed only on academic merit - it’s also about leadership potential, interest in improving society etc. The application basically invites you to talk about your “journey”. Certainly an American development - but they’re paying!

Striking how much they talk about personal identity in justifying their research: ‘growing up X’, ‘I have always been passionate about Y’. An unusual habit in Britain (e.g. we were told not to do this for UCAS!) but I suppose some Americanisms are bound to creep in by this route.

Did you know about The Gates Foundation at Cambridge University? Each year it awards 80 full-cost scholarships to international postgraduate students (£30,000-£60,000 annually). Let’s have a look at how they boost the academic calibre of Cambridge 🧵

The TOSC@ opera conference is back next year at Cambridge. I can't find a static link to the CFP (which was circulated by email), but it's 7-9 July, with an application deadline of 13th December. /

@larkingrumple Terrifying. I suppose Byström has never quite become an audience favourite in London, and the pick and mix repertoire makes the evening all about her. Sad, though

Are Wigmore Hall audiences really *that* suspicious about singers primarily known for opera performing a song recital? Current seat map for Malin Byström tomorrow: 🤯
