During the Wanli period of the Ming Dynasty(1572-1620), copperplate engraving was introduced to China by the Italian missionary Matteo Ricci. The paintings, book illustrations, and religious copper engravings he carried with him provided the Chinese with a new artistic reference system. This marked the true beginning of cultural exchange between Chinese and European fine arts.
